One of the key Australian Guineas lead-up races features on a packed Caulfield race card on Saturday with a quality line-up of three-year-olds engaged for the Autumn Stakes 2026 on Blue Diamond Prelude Day.

The Group 2 $300,000 Autumn Stakes (1400m) has been won by plenty of nice types in recent years including Microphone (2020), Coastwatch (2022) and Angel Capital (2025).
This season, a dozen potential Group 1 Australian Guineas-bound youngsters will do battle in the set weights plus penalties clash with the bookies having a hard time separating the best from the rest.
Currently sitting top of the Autumn Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au is the always-honest Planet Red ($3.60) from the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr yard.
The progressive Admire Mars gelding enjoyed a strong spring campaign last time in culminating with a second-place finish at big odds behind Autumn Boy in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
The 1400m looks ideal for him first-up on the weekend as he looks to outperform his mediocre trial form, and he’s been heavily backed in early betting by the punters despite a wide draw (10) for jockey Jamie Melham to overcome.
Microphone ($2.60 in 2020) and Angel Capital ($2.70 in 2025) are the latest favourite in Autumn Stakes betting to salute.
One-time favourite now on the second line of betting is the Ciaron Maher-trained Victoria Derby champ from the spring, Observer, who has eased out from $3 to $3.90 with some concerns over his ability at the shorter distance.
The classy colt is a two-time runner-up from as many resuming runs and steps out for the first time since completing the Moonee Valley Vase – VRC Derby double in style last prep.
Ethan Brown, who rode him for a luckless third in the Caulfield Guineas over the mile last October, comes aboard in the Autumn Stakes, and while he’s building toward bigger Group 1 targets later in the prep and he’s giving weight to the entire field — the talent gap might still be enough to carry him through.
Two other runners are also under $10 in the latest Autumn Stakes odds with the flying Davida ($6) up notably in grade chasing a hat-trick and Buccleuch ($8.50) for Patrick & Michelle Payne.
Davida might not carry the same profile as some of the headline acts in this year’s Autumn Stakes but she more than makes up for it with fitness and momentum.
She steps up to a hot 3YO field, yet she’s absolutely a Top 2 chance on the strength of her back-to-back summer wins in easier grade.
The well-bred, still untapped daughter of Bivouac is two-from-three at 1400m and fully deserving of a crack at Black-Type.
She bolted in at Cranbourne in December before edging out Ahha Ahha at Geelong on January 3, and she’s been kept fresh since, tuning up with a sharp trial win over Plymouth at The Heath on January 29.
She does rise in weight compared to her recent victories, but Craig Williams jumping aboard is a big tick and with a predicted on-pace pattern she looks capable of rolling forward, giving a big sight and potentially stealing the show to break the long drought of fillies winning this event.
Buccleuch meanwhile is drawn a dream fresh in gate four for Jye McNeil in on 58kg.
The Peltzer gelding boasts a 50% winning strike rate from six career starts to date and is a 1400m specialist (4:2-1-0).
While he’s unraced at Caulfield, he should be fitter for his resuming run when finishing mid-field over this distance at Flemington last month with excuses and he previously beat Observer home last winter, so the class is there if things go his way.
The 2026 Autumn Stakes is set to run as Caulfield Race 5 at 2:30pm (AEDT) on the 10-race card in Melbourne on Saturday.
