  • 3rd: #1 I'm Thunderstruck

The Futurity Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race traditionally held at Caulfield Racecourse* in late February on Blue Diamond Stakes Day each Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

*In 2023 the Blue Diamond Stakes Day program ran Sandown’s Ladbrokes Park Lakeside course.

Run over a middle sprint distance of 1400m, the country’s best sprinters and milers compete for a chance to win $750,000 in prize money.

There are three Group 1 races held at the meeting with the Futurity Stakes joined by the Group 1 $2 million Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) – Victoria’s premier race for two-year-olds – and the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) for sprinters.

Many horses in the Futurity Stakes field come off an earlier autumn run at Caulfield a fortnight earlier in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m). Recent horses to complete the CF Orr – Futurity Stakes double include Black Heart Bart (2017), Moment Of Change (2014) and All Too Hard (2013).

In 2022 Tofane won the CF Orr Stakes before a third in that year’s Futurity Stakes results.

The Futurity Stakes winner is now also granted entry into the Special Condition $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m).

The 2022 Futurity Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Mo’unga returning in the spring to run top three in a host of other Group 1 events including the Makybe Diva Stakes (3rd), Underwood Stakes (2nd) and VRC Champions Stakes (2nd).

The 2023 Futurity Stakes ran on Saturday February 25, 2023 at Ladbrokes Park Lakeside, Sandown and was won in style by the returning Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Alligator Blood ($2.80F).

2023 Futurity Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our exclusive Futurity Stakes 2023 Tips on the popular Group 1 event this Blue Diamond Day.

  • To Win: #2 Alligator Blood ($3.70 at time of publish)

The Gator is back this weekend and he’ll be out for blood first-up! The All Too Hard six-year-old now from the Waterhouse/Bott stable has been a real marvel returning to his best form in the spring. He was last seen winning the Group 1 Champion’s Mile (1600m) at Flemington and was far from disgraced the run before in the Cox Plate only two lengths back fifth to Anamoe. That form has been franked already this season, and now it is Alligator Blood’s turn fresh. His first-up record is good (8:3-1-1) as his 1600m stats (8:5-0-0). Should handle the track, is a small field and Blake Shinn rides form barrier four. Expect a nice autumn campaign kick-off here.

2023 Futurity Stakes Field

The Futurity Stakes field attracts a similar line-up of weight-for-age autumn hopefuls as the CF Orr Stakes contested at the same track and distance a fortnight earlier.

Horses may back-up from the Futurity Stakes field later in the autumn and contest the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington, a double completed by Niconero in 2009.

The 2023 Futurity Stakes field and barrier draw will be published below on the Wednesday before the race.

The Futurity Stakes 2023 final field features a small but quality field of just eight runners with I’m Thunderstruck and the resuming Champion’s Mile winner Alligator Blood battling for favouritism drawn barriers three and four respectively.

Scratchings Update: The 2023 Futurity Stakes field is down to just six runners with the scratching of #4 Laws Of Indices (8) who instead contests Sydney’s Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes on the same day and #7 Mr Mozart (1).

Futurity Stakes History

Founded in 1897, the Futurity Stakes was first won by Resolute and has so far featured several champion horses including three time winner Ajax with victories in the 1938 to 1940 Futurity Stakes races. Racing legend Manikato managed one step better by winning the race four times in 1979 to 1981 and again in 1983. Prior to 2006, the Futurity Stakes was a 1400m race which was also held over 1800m in 1979.

The Futurity Stakes results dating back to 2000 are listed in the table below to help with your Futurity Stakes betting selections this season.

In 2023 the Futurity Stakes ran at Sandown with Caulfield undergoing renovations.
