Previously held at Eagle Farm Racecourse in early June, the event was cancelled in 2020 due COVID-19 and then moved to its own feature race day in either late April or early May.
The mile event is a set weights race and now serves as a potential lead-up into the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
Kovalica (2023) was the last horse to complete the Queensland Guineas – Queensland Derby double.
Queensland Guineas Day now features two Group 2 events with the other feature on the card being the Group 2 Victory Stakes for Stradbroke Handicap types.
The Queensland Guineas field attracts a line-up of the season’s best three-year-old middle-distance gallopers coming off potential lead-up runs from the autumn in Sydney.
A number of times in recent years the Queensland Guineas has been held at Doomben Racecourse due to ongoing track issues at Eagle Farm.
The Queensland Guineas also now offers a ballot exemption to the winner into the $1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 (2200m) run at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
The form of the 2021 Queensland Guineas was franked with the winner Private Eye going on to dominate in the spring later that year including winning Sydney’s Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).
The 2022 Queensland Guineas form was franked with the runner-up Dark Destroyer winning the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate next start before a fourth in that year’s Queensland Derby and subsequent Group 1 Tarzino Stakes win in New Zealand that September.
The 2023 Queensland Guineas winner Kovalica ran third next-up in the Doomben Cup results against the older horses before winning the Queensland Derby that winter. He also returned in the spring for a Group 1 Epsom Handicap second in Sydney.
The Queensland Guineas 2026 runs on Saturday May 2, 2026 at Eagle Farm Racecourse as an early winter lead-up to the Queensland Derby.

Stay tuned for our insider Queensland Guineas 2026 Tips on the lucrative Group 2 event for Queensland Derby hopes this winter season.
To Win: No. 15 Snitzel Dancer
SNITZEL DANCER (1) heads north chasing a third straight win, and the in-form filly looks well placed to strike again against the boys. The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained daughter of Snitzel has taken big steps this prep and now earns her crack at stronger company. Two runs back she was dominant at Hawkesbury, lumping 59kg on Soft ground and putting a clear 2.43 lengths on Agent Zero in a performance that suggests she’ll love the 1600m. She backed that up with a sharp rise in class at Randwick on April 18, producing a powerful late surge to upset the well-supported Plaintiff in the Group 3 James HB Carr over 1400m. Notably, her winning time there was quicker than Saturday’s favourite Brave Monarch’s Listed Daybreak Lover victory on the same surface in Brisbane, a strong pointer heading into Saturday. Drawn well again and improving with every outing, she’s trending the right way and looks a major player.

Queensland Guineas History
First raced in 1896 and won by College Cap, the Queensland Guineas was originally an 8 Furlong Principal race until 1973 when it was changed to 1600m. Shortly after in 1979 the race was elevated to Group 3 status until 1988 when it was once again raised to Group Two status.
The Queensland Guineas was not held from 1942 to 1945, 1983 or in 1996.
The fastest winning time since 1988 was recorded by Sizzling in 2013 with 1 minute 24.3 seconds while the slowest time was 1 minute 43.8 seconds by Insecure in 1998.
In 2013 the Queensland Guineas moved race days, from Stradbroke Handicap Day to Queensland Oaks Day. The race distance was also changed from 1600m to 1400m. For 2017 the Queensland Guineas was contested over 1600m at Doomben Racecourse with the state of the Eagle Farm track deemed unsuitable for racing earlier in the carnival.
The 2020 Queensland Guineas was cancelled due to COVID-19 and moved forward on the winter carnival schedule from 2021.
