The Roman Consul Stakes is a Group 2 race held at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens Racecourse (moved from Royal Randwick in 2023) on a Saturday in early October. Raced over a 1200m distance, the set weights race is open to all three-year-old horses eager to take home a share of the $300,000 in prize money.

Nathan Doyle’s progressive and beautifully bred Capitalist colt Hidden Motive ($18) was huge going all-the-way to deny the better fancied Beadman (2nd) and Golden Slipper winning filly Marhoona (3rd) in an upset 2025 Roman Consul Stakes result on Hill Stakes Day.

Previously held on Epsom Handicap Day, the Roman Consul Stakes now takes place on Hill Stakes Day with racing at the meeting headlined by the $2 million Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m).

Those horses that perform well in the Roman Consul Stakes often go on to race in major events such as the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) run on Victoria Derby Day at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Brazen Beau (2014) and Switzerland (2024) are the latest horses to complete the Roman Consul Stakes – Coolmore Stud Stakes double.

In 2020 the Roman Consul Stakes winner Wild Ruler ran third in that year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes and went on to claim the 2021 Group 1 Moir Stakes in Melbourne the following spring earning a slot in The Everest.

The 2021 Roman Consul Stakes form was franked with the winner Paulele returning in the autumn of 2022 to place third in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes behind Nature Strip. He also ran second in both the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and Kingsford-Smith Cup that winter in Brisbane.

The 2022 Roman Consul Stakes winner Best Of Bordeaux franked the form with a next-up third in Melbourne’s Manikato Stakes results.

The 2023 Roman Consul Stakes form was franked with the third placed Ozzmosis winning Flemington’s Coolmore Stud Stakes at his next start.

Each season the Roman Consul Stakes winner earns a ballot exemption for the following year’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) held at Randwick in April over the autumn.

The 2025 Roman Consul Stakes took place on Saturday October 11, 2025 as part of Rosehill’s Hill Stakes Day as a lead-up to Melbourne’s Coolmore Stud Stakes and was won in a stunning all-the-way upset by underrated Capitalist colt Hidden Motive ($18).

Golden Slipper winner MARHOONA (4) has firmed into odds-on favouritism for the Roman Consul Stakes and, while she offers little value, she’s a standout pick in a compact field. Michael Freedman’s classy Snitzel filly has won three of her four starts, her only defeat a narrow second to Tempted in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes. She bounced back in style, claiming the Slipper over the boys including Wodeton, a top Caulfield Guineas fancy, and resumed with a dominant Listed Heritage Stakes win at Rosehill carrying 58kg. Back at her favourite track, dropping to 54.5kg, and drawn well with Tommy Berry aboard, she looks primed to extend her winning ways stepping up to 1200m. Hard to beat.

Each year the Roman Consul Stakes field attracts a quality line-up of short-distance three-year-olds eyeing a run down south in the Coolmore Stud Stakes field over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The 2025 Roman Consul Stakes final field features a small but quality line-up of spring sprinters led in betting by Michael Freedman’s Golden Slipper winning filly Marhoona who resumed with a good Black-Type win at the track on September 27.
