John F Feehan Stakes News
The Ladbrokes Feehan Stakes 2026 ran on Sunday September 27, 2026 at Caulfield on Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Day and was won in a historic three-peat by Ciaron Maher’s front-running queen Pride Of Jenni ($1.85F).Â
The John F. Feehan Stakes 2026 is one of Melbourne’s key early spring weight-for-age contests, and with Moonee Valley closed for redevelopment in 2026, the race takes centre stage at Caulfield Racecourse on a Sunday in late September. Run over 1600m, the Group 2 event regularly attracts proven WFA performers, rising middle-distance talents, and horses building toward major Group 1 targets later in the carnival. Its position early in the spring makes the Feehan a crucial form reference for punters, offering a clear look at which runners are forward enough to handle genuine pressure at the mile and which are tracking toward races like the Underwood Stakes and Might And Power. With strong historical ties to elite performers and reliable form lines, the John F. Feehan Stakes remains a must-watch spring feature that delivers tactical racing, high-quality fields, and plenty of betting appeal for punters chasing early season value.

The 2026 Feehan Stakes results belonged to champion mare Pride Of Jenni ($1.85F), who etched her name into the history books with a record-breaking third consecutive victory in the Group 2 at Caulfield. The evergreen nine-year-old, prepared by Ciaron Maher and partnered by regular rider Declan Bates, produced another trademark front-running masterclass first-up, controlling the race throughout before defeating Treasurethe Moment ($8) by 1½ lengths, with Pounding ($71) a further 1¾ lengths away in third. The victory extended her remarkable résumé beyond $12.8 million in prizemoney and confirmed the dual Empire Rose Stakes winner remains a major force heading into the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Spring targets remain open, with a potential return to the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Derby Day, a race she won in both 2023 and 2025, among the leading options alongside the Champions Mile and Champions Stakes. Punters quickly rallied behind the popular mare following her historic success, with Ladbrokes trimming her Empire Rose Stakes odds from $7 into $3.50, while also winding in her Champions Mile quote from $11 into $9 and Champions Stakes odds from $21 into $13, highlighting confidence that Pride Of Jenni can add further Group 1 success to her glittering career this spring.

The John F. Feehan Stakes – formerly the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes named after the great horse owner Dato Tan Chin Nam – is one of the major lead up-races in the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Held in September the 1600m mile event is a weight-for-age race that offers $500,000 in prize money. Traditionally run at Moonee Valley Racecourse the race has produced a number of Cox Plate winners in recent years including Northerly (1st in 2001), Makybe Diva (2nd in 2005), and El Segundo (1st in 2007).
In 2026, the race moved from The Valley (under redevelopment) to Caulfield and Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Day and was held on the Sunday after Saturday’s Golden Rose Stakes card in Sydney.
Officially registered as the John F. Feehan Stakes, the winner of the event now earns a ballot exemption for the Group 1 $6 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040) run back at the track in late October.
The race previously served as a nice lead-up into Caulfield’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m). In 2018 Homesman improved on a John F. Feehan Stakes second to win the Underwood Stakes and, later, place second in that year’s Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m). Homesman returned in 2019 and won the John F. Feehan first-up before a second in the Underwood.
In 2020 the John F. Feehan Stakes winner, dual Cox Plate placegetter Humidor, went on to run second in that year’s Underwood Stakes results and third in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes.
The 2021 John F Feehan Stakes form was franked with the winner Superstorm going on to finish third in both the Underwood Stakes and Toorak Handicap before winning the Cantala Stakes – now known as the Champions Mile – that spring.
The 2022 John F Feehan Stakes winner Mr Brightside franked the form the following autumn winning the then $5 million The All-Star Mile before a successful title defence in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile in 2023.
The 2023 Feehan Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Attrition going on to win the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield two starts later.
The 2024 Feehan Stakes winner Pride Of Jenni ran a next-up second in Sydney’s $5 million King Charles III Stakes, while the runner-up Mr Brightside went on to run well in a host more races including winning that season’s Group 1 Champions Mile. The form out of the 2024 Feehan was further franked with the third placed Antino travelling to Brisbane the following winter to win the Group 1 Doomben Cup.
Pride Of Jenni returned to become the event’s sixth dual champion with her runaway win in 2025. Pride Of Jenni franked the 2025 Feehan form continuing on to win the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes at Flemington later that prep.
The 2025 runner-up, Treasurethe Moment, meanwhile would continue on to enjoy an elite campaign placing in a host of subsequent Group 1 races including the Might And Power (2nd), Cox Plate (3rd) and Champions Mile (4th).
In 2026, the brilliant front-running Pride Of Jenni made history as the first horse in 56 years to win a third straight Feehan Stakes. It was a repeat of the 2025 quinella with Treasurethe Moment running second again.

2026 Feehan Stakes Form
The John F. Feehan Stakes form guide is the essential tool punters use to break down every runner in the 1600m weight-for-age feature, which in 2026 will be staged at Caulfield Racecourse while Moonee Valley undergoes redevelopment. The guide outlines each horse’s recent performances, WFA credentials, mile form, track suitability, and overall spring campaign trajectory. As one of the first major WFA contests of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Feehan form guide helps punters identify which gallopers are forward enough to handle genuine early season pressure and which are building toward Group 1 targets like the Underwood Stakes and Caulfield Stakes
What punters should look for in the Feehan Stakes form guide:
- Weight-for-age strength — Proven WFA performers or horses with strong Group 1/Group 2 form often hold a clear advantage at this level.
- Caulfield track suitability — Horses with tactical speed, balance around Caulfield’s sweeping turns, and a reliable turn of foot tend to profile well.
- Mile performance indicators — Strong 1400m–1600m form, late strength, and consistent closing sectionals are key markers of a horse ready for the Feehan.
- Speed map positioning — On pacers and horses capable of settling in the first half of the field are typically favoured. Backmarkers need a genuine tempo.
- Fitness progression — Many Feehan winners peak second-up or third-up. Punters should assess whether each runner is ready to elevate.
- Stable & jockey factors — Leading WFA stables often target this race with their early spring stars. Key rider changes can also influence the map and tempo.
