Trevor Andrews’ airborne Casino Prince gelding Roulette King ($5.50) handled a huge class rise to make it four wins on the trot when given a perfectly timed ride by Jamie Mott to hit the lead 100m out from the line and narrowly hang on to head the 2026 Alister Clark Stakes results in his autumn grand final.

Raced at Moonee Valley* during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival in March, the Alister Clark Stakes is a set weights and penalties event worth a $500,000.

The Alister Clark Stakes formerly took place under the lights at The Valley on a Friday evening before Melbourne’s The All-Star Mile race. For 2021, the race was moved to the Saturday race card with the 2021 All-Star Mile contested at Moonee Valley Racecourse before reverting back to its traditional position the following year as The All-Star Mile returned to Flemington for the fourth edition.
In 2023 the All-Star Mile returned to The Valley and as such the Alister Clark Stakes ran on the Saturday in Melbourne on the same date Sydney’s hosts its bumper Golden Slipper Day card.
In 2024 the All-Star Mile took place at Caulfield with the Alister Clark running on William Reid Stakes Day the Saturday after.
For the 2025 edition of the Alister Clark Stakes, the Group 2 stayed on the William Reid Stakes Day program at The Valley in March.
The Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1200m) held in February at Flemington and the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) on Blue Diamond Stakes Day are good lead-up races into the Alister Clark Stakes. The CS Hayes – Alister Clark Stakes double was last achieved by Cliff’s Edge (2018), while Global Exchange (2019) did the Autumn Classic – Alister Clark double.
Alternatively, three-year-olds may come into the Alister Clark Stakes field via a Sydney lead-up run in the previous Saturday’s Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) that produced the 2017 winner Hardman (7th).
Hardham also went on to run third next-up at Randwick during ‘The Championships’ in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m). Ethiopia (2012) was the last ATC Derby winner to come off a run in Melbourne’s Alister Clark Stakes improving on his lead-up second.
The form of the 2021 Alister Clark Stakes was franked with the runner-up Young Werther finishing second in that year’s ATC Derby, which was won by the Alister Clark third placed Explosive Jack. Explosive Jack also backed up to win the SA Derby before a Queensland Derby third during an outstanding campaign.
In 2023 the Alister Clark Stakes winner Bank Mur improved on a lead-up fourth in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington.
The Alister Clark Stakes form in 2023 was franked with the runner-up Suizuro going on to run third next-up in Sydney’s Australian Derby trifecta.
The 2024 Alister Clark Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Quintessa running fourth next-up up the Group 1 ATC Oaks in Sydney, while the winner Antrim Coast ran fourth in the SA Derby results that season.
The 2025 Alister Clark Stakes winner Shanwah went on to run a next-up third in that autumn’s ATC Derby trifecta. The form was further franked with that year’s Alister Clark third placegetter Statuario going on to place second in the Group 1 SA Derby during May.
The Alister Clark Stakes 2026 ran on Saturday March 21, 2026 on William Reid Stakes Day at Caulfield Racecourse with Moonee Valley undergoing redevelopment and was won in a strong performance by the consistent Trevor Rogers-trained Roulette King ($5.50).

PLANET RED (7) looks well positioned to continue his rise through the staying ranks, and the market has wasted no time declaring him the one to beat. The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained gelding has firmed into odds-on favouritism ahead of Saturday’s Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield, and he brings the right form, the right profile, and the right set-up to justify the quote. The Admire Mars chestnut announced himself as a genuine Group 1 talent in the spring when he ran a huge second at 30/1 behind Autumn Boy in the Caulfield Guineas, and he’s returned this prep in similarly strong order. His two lead-up runs have both been excellent — finishing runner-up to the flying Observer in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) and again in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m). With Observer heading to Sydney for the Rosehill Guineas, Planet Red stays home in Melbourne, third-up, rock-hard fit, and finally free of the rival who has twice denied him this campaign. That alone makes his short quote look justified. He draws ideally in barrier seven, giving Mark Zahra — who takes over the reins — every opportunity to slot in midfield and build momentum from the 600m. The rise to 2000m is a major tick for a horse who shapes as a natural stayer, and his only win this season came first-up at Sandown Lakeside, suggesting he’s been building beautifully toward this target. Last year’s favourite Shanwah delivered for punters, and Planet Red looks every chance to go back-to-back for the chalk in this race.

The Alister Clark Stakes field attracts a smart line-up of in-form three-year-old autumn gallopers. Many may be heading towards longer-distance races in Sydney later in the autumn such as the ATC Oaks or ATC Derby run at Randwick in April over 2400m.

Alister Clark Stakes History
First won by Amiable in 1939, the Alister Clark Stakes was a Principal race up until 1977. The race was named after the foundation chairman of the Moonee Valley Racing Club and master of Oaklands Hunt Club from 1901 to 1908, Mr Alister Clark.
The CS Hayes Stakes and Alister Clark Stakes double was recently achieved by Cliff’s Edge (2018).
In 2022 the Alister Clark Stakes prize money was increased from $200,000 to an incredible $750,000.
The Alister Clark Stakes prize money was reduced back to $500,000 in 2024.
In 2026 it ran at Caulfield with The Valley closed for redevelopment.
