To Win: No. 8 Autumn Glow
AUTUMN GLOW (7) looks every inch the horse to beat in Saturday’s Group 1 George Ryder Stakes, and punters haven’t wasted a second piling in. The superstar Chris Waller-trained mare has been crunched into odds-on favouritism, and the money continues to flow as she aims to keep her unbeaten record intact. The four-year-old daughter of The Autumn Sun has already stamped herself as one of the headline acts of the Sydney Autumn Carnival, and she arrives at Rosehill chasing an extraordinary 11th straight victory. She was forced to dig deep last start in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m), but as she’s done every time so far, she found a way — lifting late to protect her perfect record and remind everyone why she’s the most exciting mare in training. A dual elite-level winner in the spring thanks to her Epsom Handicap / Golden Eagle double, Autumn Glow has returned even stronger this campaign. She’s a genuine Rosehill specialist, boasting a flawless four-from-four record at the track, and the 1500m of the Ryder sits right in her sweet spot. James McDonald, chasing a slice of history as he edges closer to Damien Oliver’s all-time Group 1 tally, sticks solid and jumps from a very workable barrier seven. With tactical versatility, a devastating turn of foot, and an iron-will to win, she profiles as the clear standout in this year’s Ryder field. The George Ryder has long been a race reserved for the greats — Winx famously owned it four years running — and Autumn Glow is rapidly building a résumé worthy of that company. If she turns up in anything like her usual form, they’ll be doing well to get past her.
