Moir Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Moir Stakes 2025 Tips on the Moonee Valley racing Group 1 sprint this spring carnival season.

  • To Win: #11 Skybird ($7.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW

No doubt the Moonee Valley specialist BARAQIEL (10) will take some beating being undefeated at the track, but for a touch of value the resuming Group 1 winner SKYBIRD (5) appeals at a price looking to make a successful return to the races. The now five-year-old mare by Exosphere had just one autumn start after suffering a pectoral muscle injury during her stunning 40/1 upset in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February. Freedman has taken a cautious path with her recovery, and Skybird signaled she’s ready to return with a commanding three-length trial win over 800m in wet conditions at Horsham on August 27. John Allen will partner her first-up from barrier five, aiming to build on her solid fresh record of two wins and a placing from four starts. Can surprise.

Moir Stakes News

The Group 1 short-distance feature is held at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne during the Spring Carnival.

In recent years it has been held under the lights on a Friday night, but in 2024 moves to a daytime slot on a Saturday in early September.

The weight-for-age event attracts a good group of horses suited to the tight track, many heading towards the Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) back at the track later in the month.

Classy New Zealand mare Imperatriz (2023) was the last horse to complete the Moir Stakes – Manikato Stakes double.

Previously the best lead-up races include the 1000m Schillaci Stakes and the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at the same track and distance as the Moir. The Schillaci Stakes – Moir Stakes betting double was popular with punters and was last achieved by Black Caviar (2010 & 2011).

Imperatriz (2023) was the last runner to complete the McEwen Stakes – Moir Stakes double at The Valley.

In 2024 the Moir Stakes is the sole Group status race on the Moonee Valley card and runs a month earlier before the Schillaci and McEwen Stakes races.

The AJ Moir Stakes also now serves as a potential lead-up for sprinters heading towards a run in the world’s richest turf race, Sydney’s $20 million The Everest (1200m) held the following month at Randwick.

It is also a key lead-up to Flemington’s Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic – currently run as the Champions Sprint – during the Melbourne Cup Carnival with Nature Strip (2019) followed by Imperatriz (2023) the latest to win both races in the same season.

The 2022 Moir Stakes form was franked with the winning filly Coolangatta returning the next autumn to win the 2023 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington. The Moir runner-up in 2022 Bella Nipotina meanwhile won the Manikato at her next start and also placed third in WA’s inaugural $4 million The Quokka race the next year.

Following her 2023 Moir Stakes – Manikato Stakes – VRC Champions Sprint treble, Imperatriz returned the following autumn to win two further Group 1 races in 2024 before her retirement.

The season’s best Moir Stakes 2025 betting odds are led by the proven sprinters at the tight Moonee Valley track and any Group winners resuming with a nice first-up record.

Nature Strip ($3.30 in 2019) and Imperatriz ($1.65 in 2023) are the latest favourites in A.J. Moir Stakes betting to salute.

The Moir Stakes field is a key early spring feature for short-distance specialists that could target upcoming Group 1 features including Flemington’s VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) run down the straight during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Lots of horses run first-up in the Moir Stakes field, while the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes has provided the most Moir Stakes winners than any other lead-up race over the past 20 years before the Group 1 changed dates ahead of the 2024 edition.

The official 2025 Moir Stakes field and barrier draw will be released the Tuesday leading up to Moir Stakes Day.

The Moir Stakes 2025 final field features a capacity line-up of short-distance specialists including returning Black Caviar Lightning champ Skybird, Queman coming off a Group 3 Morphettville win, and Baraqiel who won the Listed Norman Carlyon Stakes at the track and trip last time out.
