It is a tight battle for favouritism in Australian Derby 2026 betting for this weekend with Green Spaces and Observer fighting for top spot in the markets on the Randwick, staying feature on Day 1 of The Championships.

Royal Randwick comes to life for a bumper Doncaster Mile Day program on Saturday featuring no less than four elite level races including the Group 1 $2 million Australian Derby (2400m) for the three-year-olds.
A terrific line-up of 13 young stayers will face off in this year’s Australian Derby field, and the bookies are having a hard time separating the two top elects.
Currently sitting top of the Australian Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the final field is the progressive Bjorn Baker-trained Street Boss colt Green Spaces at $3.20 following his favourable midfield barrier six draw.
Winless since his three-length romp home in Newcastle’s Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) last November, he’s been working his way through the grades and distances this prep and looks set to peak on Saturday.
At his latest he ran out of his skin for an eye-catching flash home for third at a big price in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) which has been the key ATC Derby form race to follow in recent years.
Looking like he was crying out for further, Green Spaces is sure to appreciate his first go at the mile and a half in the Derby with Rachel King retaining the ride.
Following very closely in the markets at $3.30 is the highly rated Ciaron Maher-trained Ghaiyyath colt Observer who has work to do from wider out in gate 12.
One of few in the mix proven over the distance, Observer won Flemington’s Group 1 VRC Derby (2500m) in the spring and has been good again this prep winning two on the trot before his Rosehill Guineas third last time out.
After claiming the Group 2 Autumn Stakes / Group 1 Australian Guineas double in Melbourne he travelled to Sydney for the first time for the Rosehill Guineas and was far from disgraced rounding out the trifecta.
Having had his maiden run the Sydney way now he’s likely to improve and relish the rise in trip as he looks to bounce back and return to winning form to add a third Group 1 trophy to his CV.
The big tick for Observer is the booking of record-breaking hoop James McDonald who comes aboard the horse for the first time looking to weave his magic.
Outside of the dominant duo, the only other runner at single figure Australian Derby odds of $4 is Storm Leopard.
The Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained chestnut is being thrown in the deep end facing his first Group 1 assignment on the quick back-up off his barnstorming 1.8 length victory in last weekend’s Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.
A winner of three of his six starts to date, Saturday marks Storm Leopard’s first Randwick task and there’s plenty of punters coming for this up-and-comer who is drawn a dream in gate five with Tommy Berry – chasing his sticking with.
Quick Thinker (2020) was the last horse to do the Tulloch Stakes / Derby double Storm Leopard chases on Saturday.
Of the double figure chances in the Derby mix this autumn those considered genuine value contenders for the title include Team Hawkes’ Rosehill Guineas fifth placegetter Federalist ($11) who is yet to run in the money from four previous Randwick starts and Roger James & Robert Wellwood‘s visiting New Zealand Derby champ Road To Paris ($12).
Mongolian Khan (2015) was the last three-year-old to complete the Trans-Tasman NZ Derby / Australian Derby double Road To Paris is out to emulate this season.
The 2026 Australian Derby is set to run as Randwick Race 9 at 5:15pm (AEDT) as the penultimate event on The Championships Day 1.
