Australian Oaks News

The ATC Australian Oaks, also referred to as the ATC Oaks, is a Group 1 race for the best three-year-old staying fillies in the country. Held annually one week after the Australian Derby, the Australian Oaks is a 2400m classic race held at Royal Randwick Racecourse. As a set weights race, all entrants carry 56kg with $1 million in total prize money on offer.

The Australian Oaks takes place during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and is held on one of the carnival’s biggest Group 1 race days. Conducted on the second Saturday in April on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’ the ATC Oaks is one of four Group 1 races on the card. The meeting also features the lucrative Group 1 $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), the Group 1 $2 million Sydney Cup (3200m), and the Group 1 $1 million Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

There are a number of different lead-up races for fillies in the Australian Oaks field to come via including the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) run the Saturday before and the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill in late March.

The latest fillies to complete the Vinery Stud Stakes – ATC Oaks double are the Chris Waller-trained duo of Verry Elleegant (2019) and Hungry Heart (2021), followed by Treasurethe Moment (2025).

Colette (2020) became the first Adrian Knox – Australian Oaks double winner on the quick back-up since Royal Descent (2013). Colette also went on to take out the second edition of Sydney’s now $10 million The Golden Eagle that November.

In 2024 the Adrian Knox Stakes also produced the Australian Oaks winner with Autumn Angel improving on her lead-up second to win the Group 1 on the quick back-up.

The 2022 Australian Oaks form was franked with the runner-up Gypsy Goddess going on to win the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) in Brisbane two runs later as well as finish third in the $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) during the spring.

The ATC Oaks 2024 form was franked with the runner-up Zardozi returning for a big spring that included a fourth in that year’s Melbourne Cup results.

The 2025 Australian Oaks winner Treasurethe Moment franked the form with a next-up win in the spring’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes as well as a third in that year’s Cox Plate trifecta. The ATC Oaks third placegetter You Wahng meanwhile went to Brisbane that winter and took out the Group 1 Queensland Oaks.

Australian Oaks History

First won by Uralla in 1912, the ATC Oaks was originally named the Adrian Knox Stakes until 1956. The race has undergone several distance changes with the field of horses running over 1 mile (approximately 1600m) between 1922 and 1945 and between 1946 and 1955 the event was raced over 10 furlongs (2000m).

Jockey Glen Boss celebrated his fourth win in the Australian Oaks aboard Colette in 2020.

In 2023 the Australian Oaks was won by the visiting New Zealand Oaks winning filly Pennyweka.

In 2025 the Australian Oaks was won by the previous spring’s VRC Oaks champion Treasurethe Moment.
