In a historical performance in the feature race at Royal Randwick on Saturday, the talented Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman-trained filly Sheza Alibi produced a career best performance to destroy her male rivals including runner-up Autumn Boy by over four lengths to salute for the punters as the odds-on fancy in the Doncaster Mile 2026.

The first filly since the mighty Sunline back in 1999 to win the famous Randwick mile event, the bonnie daughter of Saxon Warrior was far too strong for her rivals with a powerhouse romp home with Jamie Melham aboard in the Group 1 $4 million Doncaster Mile (1600m).
Extending her picket fence, Sheza Alibi ($1.90F) made it five wins on the trot and back-to-back Group 1s at the track and trip following on from her lead-up 3.2 length win in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas.
In a repeat of the Randwick Guineas quinella, Sheza Alibi again beat home Chris Waller‘s smart The Autumn Sun colt Autumn Boy who came via a subsequent Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) success on Slipper Day.
Autumn Boy was no match for the eventual Doncaster Mile champion filly who treated fans to one of the greatest Doncaster Mile performances in the event’s long history.
“That was breathtaking, the second colt is a super colt and what she does is just amazing,” co-trainer Moody told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-race.
“Quite phenomenal and she’s so nondescript, she doesn’t stand out at home in training, she’s just a tradesman, she’s got a great hip, a big deep girth and a hell of a lot of ability.
“I thought she had the perfect prep, won the Guineas, got the ballot exemption, we missed the penalty and it just set up beautifully.
“The only thing was the soft ground, good horses like to be close to on top of the ground, any good horse does, nothing goes faster with cut in the ground.
“Crikey hard to go much faster than her, her last couple.”
As Evaporate led the field around, Melham sat patiently off speed on the heavily backed favourite awaiting her time to strike.
That time came at the final furlong when 49kg lightweight Sheza Alibi began to wind up hard and fast down the outside.
Going through her gears in effortless style, she flew past the front running pack, hit the lead 150m out from the line and raced away for a 4.29 length victory that stamped her a class above her fellow milers young and old.
“What a horse, I trialled her the other day and she gave me a nice feel, but with blinkers on today, Jesus Christ, I’ve never sat on a horse that has given me goosebumps like that before,” an ecstatic Melham said.
“I got pushed a bit wide and got back a bit too far, but we got there in about a few strides, and she just sailed away from them.
“They have a very, very special horse on their hands.
“I’ve sat on some very special horses before, but I don’t think any come close to the feel she just gave me then.
“I’m very happy to be hungry to be riding a horse like this.”
Following her over was the aforementioned Autumn Boy ($10), while the Doncaster Mile trifecta was rounded out by another Group 1 winner from the Waller stable, Militarize ($41) who never gave up despite the winner quickly putting him to bed on the straight.
“Great run by him today,” jockey Kerrin McEvoy said of the runner-up Autumn Boy.
“Travelled nicely, enjoyed that ground, presented at the top of the straight.
“Winner was too sharp.”
While still officially in the nominations for next weekend’s Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes (1600m) paying $21 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win, Sheza Alibi is more likely to head to the paddock now ahead of what is sure to be a sensational spring for the rising four-year-old.
