2025 The Goodwood Results: 3YO Reserve Bank Wins, Giga Kick 3rd

The Goodwood is a Group 1 race held at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide as part of the South Australia Jockey Club’s premier racing carnival. Taking place in May of each year, The Goodwood is a 1200m sprint run under set weights plus penalties and is currently worth $1 million in total prize money as of 2024, making it one of the more lucrative South Australian races.

As the leading sprint race at the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, the event always attracts a highly competitive field of quality gallopers. Entries may come via a number of earlier races including the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) for fillies & mares at the same track and distance a fortnight earlier.

In 2021 the Robert Sangster Stakes winning filly ran second in The Goodwood behind shock winner Savatoxl. The Robert Sangster Stakes form from 2023 was franked in The Goodwood with Another Award running second in both Group 1s and Zapateo placing third in both races.

The latest horses to complete the Robert Sangster Stakes – The Goodwood double were Black Caviar (2012) and Platelet (2013).

The 2023 The Goodwood form was franked with the third placed Zapateo returning the following autumn to win Sydney’s Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in 2024.

In 2024 The Goodwood was won by Benedetta who improved on a third in the Robert Sangster, while that year’s Robert Sangster Stakes winner Climbing Star finished third next-up The Goodwood trifecta.

The Goodwood 2024 form was franked the following year by Benedetta who returned in the autumn of 2025 to run placings in Melbourne’s Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (3rd) and Group 1 William Reid Stakes (2nd). Stretan Angel meanwhile was runner-up in the 2024 The Goodwood, second in the 2025 Black Caviar Lightning and third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap in 2025 to further frank the form out of Adelaide.

The 2025 The Goodwood third placegetter, Giga Kick, franked the form that spring winning Flemington’s Group 1 Champions Sprint.

There was a notable upset in 2022 with Lombardo winning at The Goodwood odds of $18 and again in 2023 with the filly Royal Merchant also saluting at $18 in The Goodwood betting.

The Goodwood nominations are taken in early May about a fortnight out from the race and the full list of early entries will be available below.

The 2026 The Goodwood nominations close on Thursday the 30th of April 2026.  

2026 The Goodwood Field

The Goodwood race field attracts a smart line-up of sprinters, many coming out of lead-up sprint races held in Melbourne or Sydney during the autumn. Alternatively, fillies and mares may have a lead-up into The Goodwood at the track and distance two weeks prior in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m).

In 2023 the same two mares, Another Award and Zapateo, ran second and third respectively in both the Robert Sangster and The Goodwood results.

In 2024 Climbing Star won the Robert Sangster and ran third in The Goodwood trifecta behind Benedetta who and finished third in the Robert Sangster Stakes.

Brisbane winter racing could also be on the agenda for sprinters in The Goodwood field.

The official The Goodwood 2026 field and barriers are set for release on the Tuesday of race week and will be announced below.

The Goodwood History

D.O.D. was the inaugural Goodwood winner in 1881 when it was a principal race run over six furlongs. From 1886 to 1888 the race was not held but resumed the next year in 1889 under the same status and distance. In 1942 and 1943 the race did not take place again. The length was converted to 1200m in 1973, and the race’s status was lifted to Group 1 in 1980. Up until 2007 the race was run as a handicap event known as the Goodwood Handicap.

Notable recent The Goodwood winners include Trekking (2020), Black Heart Bart (2016) and super mare Black Caviar (2012).

In 2023 Royal Merchant became the first The Goodwood winning filly since Lone Rock (2011).

Reserve Bank (2025) is the last three-year-old The Goodwood winner.
