Brisbane’s Stradbroke Handicap is on the agenda this winter for Jason Warren’s class mare Benedetta after her impressive Morphettville win in Saturday’s 2024 The Goodwood.

Former local, Jamie Kah, enjoyed her 14th career Group 1 and second at this year’s Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival when getting the very best out of Benedetta late to salute in the Group 1 $1 million The Goodwood (1200m).
Kah won her first Adelaide Group 1 last weekend in the SA Derby aboard Coco Sun, and was back in the winners’ stall for the 139th running of The Goodwood seven days later.
Progressive Hellbent four-year-old, Benedetta ($6), went around in the sprint classic with support from the punters having had two good lead-up runs at the track.
Two back she won the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) over Climbing Star before her third to that very mare when Climbing Star turned the tables to take out the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) on April 27.
That form proved the one to follow into The Goodwood at the same track and trip with Benedetta too good the closing stages.
Kah was masterful in the saddle once again, keeping the eventual The Goodwood winner off the rails early, getting up to the middle of the track and having enough in the tank to finish a head in front of the Phillip Stokes-trained Stretan Angel ($31).
Benedetta’s regular rider, Daniel Stackhouse, very nearly stole the Group 1 aboard outsider Stretan Angel coming home strong late aboard the up-and-coming Harry Angel filly only to be denied right on the line.
Stokes ran two-three in The Goodwood trifecta with his Robert Sangster winner Climbing Star good again running 1.6 lengths back third at $20 when forgotten in the markets again.
Warren was quick to confirm plans to head up to Brisbane with Benedetta shooting for the Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 15.
“Just wanted to get the job done for the horse, she’s been so gallant in defeat in good races,” he told Racing.com post-victory.
“Just to get that Group 1 under her belt, it’s a big relief.
“We’ll head north now and head towards the Stradbroke.”
