2025 Winterbottom Stakes Results

Stay tuned for the official 2025 Winterbottom Stakes results and finishing order on Saturday November 29, 2025.

  • 1st: No. 6 Libertad ($21)
  • 2nd: No. 1 Overpass
  • 3rd: No. 4 Rey Magnerio

Winning Margin: 0.06 lengths

Winning Time: 1:10.38

Libertad ($21) produced one of the biggest shocks of the Pinnacles Carnival when he narrowly headed the 2025 Winterbottom Stakes results at Ascot on Saturday. Sent out at long odds, the five-year-old Russian Revolution entire trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald and ridden by Jamie Mott surged late to deny hot favourite Overpass a historic third consecutive victory in the race.

Mott tracked Overpass throughout and seized the inside run when the favourite rolled off the fence on the home turn, driving Libertad to the front in a thrilling head-to-head battle. The nose margin made for one of the most dramatic Winterbottom finishes in recent memory, with Rey Magnerio finishing third just half a length away.

The victory delivered Libertad his first Group 1 success, boosted his profile as a stallion prospect, and gave Mott a career highlight with his fourth Group 1 win, while simultaneously ending Overpass’s bid for a rare three-peat in Western Australia’s premier sprint.

Winterbottom Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Winterbottom Stakes 2025 Tips on the lucrative Perth sprint feature this November.

To Win: No. 2 Jokers Grin

It may be a smaller line-up this year, but the quality is still elite, and all eyes are on Bernie Miller’s star sprinter JOKERS GRIN (5), who heads the Winterbottom Stakes odds at $2.60 at time of publish.

This flying five-year-old is the Ascot track specialist in the mix, chasing his fourth straight win at the course. Drawn perfectly in gate five with Patrick Carbery aboard, Jokers Grin boasts an outstanding Ascot record of 8:6-2-0, including three consecutive victories leading into Saturday’s Group 1.

Punters will remember his incredible boilover in the autumn when he overcame a wide alley at blowout odds to claim the $4 million The Quokka. He’s come back this prep in equally impressive form, going back-to-back in the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes and Colonel Reeves Stakes.

Now, dropping a kilo under weight-for-age conditions, Jokers Grin looks red-hot and ready to peak third-up. Fit, flying, and with the home-track advantage, he’s the one to beat as he looks to keep the winning streak alive.

I’m sticking with Jokers Grin – the Ascot specialist in career-best form, primed to deliver again in the Winterbottom Stakes!

Winterbottom Stakes News

The Group 1 2025 Winterbottom Stakes is 1200m sprint held in late November or early December annually at Ascot Racecourse in Perth. Run under weight-for-age conditions, the contenders aged three-years-old and up compete for the lucrative prize purse of $1.5 million.

The event is conducted on Day 2 of the major Perth Summer Racing Carnival in Western Australia, which also features the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) the weekend before and the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) – renamed in 2022 as the Northerly Stakes – the following Saturday.

As the premier sprint event in Perth, entries are generally handy local sprinters and the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1200m) at the same track and distance a fortnight earlier is a key lead-up.

With the race growing in prize money and prestige, interstate raiders are more commonly making the trip over to WA to take on the locals in the Winterbottom Stakes field with Melbourne races producing ten of the Winterbottom Stakes winners from 2011-2025 most recently Viddora (2017) who improved on a lead-up fourth in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, Voodoo Lad (2018) who ran eighth in the Manikato before winning that year’s Winterbottom, comeback galloper Hey Doc (2019) who finished third in Sandown’s Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes, the Godolphin-raced Paulele (2022) who improved on an unplaced 11th in Flemington’s Group 1 Champions Sprint, the Bjorn Baker-trained Overpass (2024) who ran 8th in the Champions Sprint in his lead-up, and Rob & Annabel Neasham’s Sydney trained galloper Libertad (2025) who came via a fourth in Flemington’s Group 1 Champions Sprint.

Runners that do well in the Winterbottom Stakes may stay on for other weight-for-age events in Perth including the Group 3 AJ Sachill Stakes (1400m) a fortnight later. In 2021 Stageman ran second in both the Winterbottom Stakes and the AJ Scahill Stakes results.

The 2021 Winterbottom Stakes form was further franked with the third place-getter Elite Street returning the following winter to win the Group 3 Northam Stakes – Roma Cup double.

Horses that contest the summer’s Winterbottom Stakes are also now likely to target a slot in Perth’s richest race, the $4 million The Quokka (1200m), taking place for the first time in April of 2023.

The 2022 Winterbottom Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Kissonallforcheeks going on to place third in the inaugural edition of the Group 3 $1.5 million The Gold Rush (1400m).

In 2023 Overpass won the Winterbottom Stakes after taking out the inaugural The Quokka race at the track earlier that year. Overpass returned in April of 2024 to successfully defend his The Quokka title and further frank the Winterbottom form before another Winterbottom win for the punters in 2024.

Overpass went on to frank the 2024 Winterbottom Stakes form with a second in the following autumn’s Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney and a fourth in the 2025 The Everest results.

Overpass returned in 2025 chasing an historic three-peat but was narrowly denied right on the line by upset 20/1 champion Libertad.

Winterbottom Stakes History

The Winterbottom Stakes began as a principal race run over seven furlongs and was first run in 1952 when Raconteur claimed victory. In 1973 the race distance was converted to 1400m and the event gained Group 2 status in 1979. The length was decreased to its current 1200m sprint distance in 1993.

A number of high-quality horses have claimed victory in the Winterbottom Stakes including Buffering (2013 & 2015), Ortensia (2009-11), Takeover Target (2008), and Miss Andretti (2005).

Since 2011 the Winterbottom Stakes has run as a Group 1 feature, having achieved elite level status.

Overpass (2023, 2024) is the latest dual Winterbottom Stakes winner.
