The 1400m event is held as the first Group 1 of the new racing season and is a great lead up race to the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) run a fortnight later over the mile at Flemington.

Dissident (2014) followed by Mr Brightside (2023) nearly a decade later are the latest horses to complete the Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva Stakes double.

Raced on the same day as the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m), the Group 3 The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m) and the Group 3 W.W. Cockram Stakes (1200m), the Memsie Stakes has produced some outstanding Cox Plate winners including El Segundo (2006), Makybe Diva (2005), Sunline (2001-01), and Dane Ripper (1998).

The Memsie Stakes is now the first Group 1 race of the racing year after it was elevated from Group 2 status for the 2013/2014 season.

The form out of the 2021 Memsie Stakes was franked with the third-placed mare Tofane going on to place in a host of other Group 1 events and win the following autumn’s Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at the same track/distance.

The 2022 Memsie Stakes form was franked with the runner-up I’m Thunderstruck winning the Makybe Diva next start before a number of other Group 1 placings including a second in that year’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Sadly I’m Thunderstruck would go on to be euthanised in March of 2023 following arthroscopic fetlock surgery. He suffered a catastrophic knee injury whilst getting up after general anaesthetic.

In 2023 after completing the Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva double, Mr Brightside went on to further frank the form with a host of other Group 1 placings including in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (2nd), Cox Plate (2nd) and Cantala Stakes (2nd). He returned in the autumn of 2024 to win the CF Orr – Futurity Stakes double before a second in that year’s All-Star Mile.

Mr Brightside returned as the favourite in 2024 looking to go back-to-back but could only manage to finish a first-up second to upset winner Pinstriped ($14).

The 2024 Memsie Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Mr Brightside, who had won the year prior, taking out the Makybe Diva Stakes at his next start.

Mr Brightside contested the race again in 2025 when running a brave but distant second behind the brilliant Treasurethe Moment who made it nine straight wins with her impressive first-up win as a four-year-old.

The 2025 Memsie Stakes took place at Caulfield on Saturday August 30, 2025 as the opening Group 1 of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and was won in outstanding fashion by the returning Matt Laurie trained VRC Oaks – ATC Oaks double champion Treasurethe Moment ($6).

2025 Memsie Stakes Betting

The season’s Memsie Stakes 2025 betting odds and betting market links to Ladbrokes.com.au will be available at Races.com.au as soon as released this spring carnival.

Mr Brightside ($2.70 in 2023) was the last favourite in Memsie Stakes betting to salute for the punters.

There was a notable upset in 2024 with Pinstriped saluting at Memsie Stakes odds of $14 over the beaten $2.50 favourite Mr Brightside who ran second in a failed title defence.

  • To Win: #6 Another Wil ($3.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW

ANOTHER WIL (3) is the firming favourite first-up in the Memsie and, while this is a genuine Group 1 field stacked with depth, I’m happy to suggest he’ll salute for the punters. Ciaron Maher’s six-year-old son of Street Boss is a first-up specialist (4:3-1-0) and looks ready to fly fresh on Saturday from a favourable barrier 3 draw with Jamie Melham in the saddle. His record at Caulfield is imposing (6:4-1-0) and he’s only been beaten once at this track and trip. He won the CF Orr here beating Mr Brightside first-up last time in and was brave in defeat in his two following autumn assignments. He crossed just 1.4 lengths off Tom Kitten in the All-Star Mile at HQ and his Doncaster sixth with 56.5kg had him under a length off the winner in a blanket finish. He ticks too many boxes to ignore and think he’ll be bagging another Group 1 on the weekend.

2025 Memsie Stakes Field

The Memsie Stakes field attracts a strong line-up of talented weight-for-age performers often kicking off their spring bids and eventually heading towards races like the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) later in the spring.

Good lead-up races for horses heading towards the Group 1 Memsie Stakes field include the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at Caulfield in late July and the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) run a fortnight before Memsie Stakes Day.

Mr Brightside (2023) was the last horse to complete the P.B. Lawrence Stakes – Memsie Stakes double.

Pinstriped (2nd in 2024) was the last Memsie Stakes winner to come via a lead-up run in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes.

The official Memsie Stakes 2025 Final Field & Barriers will be released on the Wednesday of race week and published in full below.

The 2025 Memsie Stakes field features a cracking 11-horse line-up including Chris Waller’s Fangirl in her delayed spring return, the Tony Gollan trained Doomben Cup hero from the winter Antino, the progressive All Star Mile champ Tom Kitten now with the Freedmans, and evergreen veteran Mr Brightside who won this race in 2023 and ran second last year.

Memsie Stakes History

First won by Veneda in 1899, the Memsie Stakes has had several multiple winners of the race including the four time race champion Lord from 1958-61. Eurythmic (1920-22) and Ajax (1938-40) have won the race three consecutive times each while there have been several double winners including Heroic (1925-26), Waltzing Lily (1933-34), Comic Court (1949-50), Coppice (1954-55), Yangtze (1965-66), and Sunline (2000-01).

In more recent years the Memsie Stakes has been won by the likes of three-time Melbourne Cup champion Makybe Diva (2005), gun filly Miss Finland (2007), So You Think (2010), dual winner from South Australia Behemoth (2020-21), and the talented Team Hayes-trained weight-for-age hero Mr Brightside (2023).

In 2025, the returning VRC Oaks – Australian Oaks double winner Treasurethe Moment won the Memsie Stakes first-up as a four-year-old mare.
