Melbourne’s spring racing season launches into top gear today, Saturday August 30, with the 2025 Memsie Stakes headlining a talent-packed 10-race card at Caulfield.
Below, we break down the latest odds, late mail, and expert tips for the Group 1 feature.

The big news of race morning is the withdrawal of last year’s Melbourne Cup fourth placed mare Zardozi from the Group 1 $750,000 Memsie Stakes (1400m).
Ciaron Maher’s daughter of Kingman was a 60/1 outsider in Memsie Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au but has had her first-up start this season delayed.
Zardozi was scratched from the Memsie Stakes primarily due to unsuitable ground conditions with Caulfield rated a Soft (5).
Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull explained that she had previously avoided the Winx Stakes for the same reason when racing at Randwick went ahead on a Heavy (10) last weekend, and that the now five-year-old had come to Melbourne in good order to begin her spring campaign.
While she was ready to race, the 1400m distance was considered a bit sharp for the proven stayer at this stage, and the team viewed it more as a steppingstone toward more suitable races in the coming weeks.
A potential new early target for Zardozi could be the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 20 over a more suitable distance.
With Zardozi out Maher, who won the Memsie with Snapdancer back in 2022 in partnership with David Eustace, will have just the one runner with race favourite Another Wil.
The race day market mover and first-up specialist sits top of the latest Memsie Stakes odds at $3.60 and will jump from barrier three with Jamie Melham in the saddle.
Chasing his first win since his first-up Group 1 CF Orr Stakes victory over Mr Brightside at the track and trip back in February when jumping at a similar price, the six-year-old son of Street Boss was lasty seen running a brave sixth under a length off Stefi Magnetica in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 5.
He’s proven extremely proficient at Caulfield where he boasts four wins and a second from six starts and remains our standout Memsie Stakes 2025 tip to win.

Latest Odds, Favourites & Market Moves
- No. 6 Another Wil ($4.40 into $3.60): The favourite and market mover into $3.60 to kick off his spring with another Group 1 success over the course and distance.
- No. 3 Antino ($6 into $5.50): Considered one of the main dangers, Tony Gollan’s Doomben Cup champ is wider out in gate eight with Blake Shinn to ride first-up.
- No. 9 Fangirl ($4.60 out to $5.50): Now the equal second pick in the markets, Chris Waller’s multiple Group 1 winning mare makes her delayed start to the season after being scratched from the Winx Stakes but has never run at the Caulfield track.
- No. 11 Treasurethe Moment ($7 into $6): Matt Laurie’s new season four-year-old chases her ninth straight win having collected the Vinery Stud Stakes – Australian Oaks double at her latest two starts. She’s drawn the rails, flies fresh and looks a genuine winning hope despite the 1400m being short of her preferred. Damian Lane rides.
- No. 1 Mr Brightside ($5.50 out to $7.50): Lindsay Park’s champion WFA veteran is being left alone by punters so far this morning despite having won this race in 2023 and run a brave second last year. Jumps from barrier nine with regular rider Craig Williams booked.
- No. 2 Tom Kitten ($7 out to $8): A slight drift for the now Anthony & Sam Freedman trained All-Star Mile champ from the autumn who’ll get a dream run from gate four with Ben Melham to ride the Cox Plate-bound galloper.
Late Mail
- Zardozi: Scratched due to the unsuitable race surface and distance.
- Mr Brightside: Despite a poor Hong Kong run, the team expects the stable stalwart to bounce back. His Caulfield record is excellent (6 wins from 11 starts) and could have enough to lead all-the-way and upstage the young guns.
- Tom Kitten: Trialled well and looks ready to fire first-up. He’s matured significantly and could surprise with this Godolphin raced gem really coming into his own after a huge autumn. Expected to settle off midfield with a strong finish pending.
- Treasurethe Moment: One of the most exciting prospects. Trialled like a rocket and could lead from barrier 1.
- Another Wil: Strong first-up record and already a Group 1 winner at this track/trip. Now outright favourite in the markets. Should be off pace but finishing strongly.
