The 2015 Northam Cup is a Listed mile event held towards the end of October.
The Listed 2015 Northam Cup is a 1600m quality handicap held at Northam Racecourse in Western Australia.
Taking place in late October, the Northam Cup is open only to horses aged three years and older and pays $120,000, very decent for a country cup.
Horses that target the Northam Cup generally do so following non black type events elsewhere in Western Australia. The Group 3 Northerly Stakes at Ascot has been a fairly accurate lead up race in the past. The cup series comprising the Coolgardie Cup, Boulder Cup and Kalgoorlie Cup also acts as a fairly good line for horses to take into the Northam Cup.
Many trainers choose to run their classier horses in the Northam Cup first up as a way of getting them going in time for the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.
Following the Northam Cup, better types will step up to Group 3 for the Asian Beau Stakes, Colonel Reeves Stakes or Lee Steere Stakes. The Group 1 Kingston Town Classic is a potential target for the genuinely talented sorts.
The Northam Cup 2015 will be run on Sunday October 25th.

The Northam Cup field attracts a fairly diverse range of runners. Usually, horses that are fairly decent in quality handicaps and who prefer the mile distance will target the Northam Cup field. However, many trainers enter their horses in the Northam Cup field to start preparing them for summer races. As a result, you might spot some stayers in the Northam Cup field who are starting a little shorter before stepping up.
The 2015 Northam Cup field will be published below.
The Northam Cup nominations are usually comprised of a wide range of horses, from non black type runners to those who have a few group victories. The Northam Cup nominations generally attract a few horses who are above listed status. Punters tend to pay a bit of attention to the Northam Cup nominations, as they can provide a good indication as to which horses are beginning their return to racing following a spell.
The 2015 Northam Cup nominations will be published here.
Established in 1863, the Northam Race Club has grown into one of Western Australia’s premium country racing clubs. Northam Racecourse is one of the better maintained tracks in the country around Perth, which also contributes to the fairly impressive fields they get there. The long 425 metre straight no doubt also plays a part in drawing strong finishers.
The Northam Cup has grown into a fairly important race for both trainers and punters. As one of the earliest black type races in the season, the Northam Cup attracts a lot of horses that will go on to bigger races later on. As a result, it is watched quite closely.
The 1600m record for the track was set by Jinx King in the 2009 Northam Cup, with a time of 1:33.47. In 2006 and 2007 the Northam Cup was run over 2300m. Prior to that, it was run over 2200m.
Notable Northam Cup winners include Zero Engagement (2004), Sentenza (2010) and Angel Of Mercy (2013). Northam Cup results since 2000 are listed below.
