Proxima Dea has stamped herself as one of the most exciting staying fillies in the country after extending her perfect record with a dominant victory in Saturday’s 2026 Spring Champion Stakes results at Randwick.

The David Payne-trained daughter of Tarzino made it five wins from as many starts with a commanding performance against the colts and geldings in this year’s Group 1 $2 million Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), defeating favourite Global Goal and Cormier to claim her maiden Group 1 success and cement her status as the horse to beat in the upcoming Group 1 $1 million VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington.
Following the victory, bookmakers wasted no time reacting, slashing Proxima Dea’s VRC Oaks 2026 odds into $2 favouritism with Ladbrokes, with the unbeaten filly now set to head south for the Group 1 classic on November 5.
Proxima Dea Maintains Perfect Record in Group 1 Breakthrough
Having already announced herself as a serious staying prospect with victories in Sydney culminating in the Gloaming Stakes, Proxima Dea took another major step on Saturday when stepping out to 2000 metres for the first time.
She joined the likes of Shadow Hero (2019), Sharp ‘N’ Smart (2022) and El Castello (2024) as the latest three-year-olds to complete the Gloaming Stakes – Spring Champion double.
Ridden with supreme confidence by Zac Lloyd, the filly was sent forward early before settling outside the speed and taking control of the race well before the home turn.
When the pressure was applied in the straight, she quickly put her rivals away and surged clear to score by 1½ lengths.

Winning Time: 2:01.86

The victory took the filly’s earnings beyond $1.6 million and maintained her flawless career record through five starts.
Payne Believes Oaks Distance Will Suit Even Better
Veteran horseman David Payne was full of praise for his stable star, describing her as a filly whose courage and determination continue to outweigh her modest physical appearance.
“To look at her you wouldn’t give much for her, but she seems to have everything – guts, heart and class,” he told Sky Thoroughbred Central post-race.
Payne revealed he instructed Lloyd to make the race a genuine staying contest rather than risk turning it into a sprint home.
“I said to Zac she will outstay them, we can’t have a sit and sprint,” he explained.
“I told him if nothing goes, you go, get up outside the leader and go early on her.”
The trainer is convinced the step from 2000 metres to the 2500m VRC Oaks will only enhance her chances.
“We know the further the better with this filly,” he said.
“She can go to the Oaks now.
“The extra 500 metres won’t be a problem, she will love it and we can give her an easier ride.”

Better Stayer Than Montefilia?
Payne has trained some outstanding fillies during his career, including Group 1-winning mare Montefilia, but he believes Proxima Dea may possess even stronger staying credentials.
“This filly keeps surprising me,” he admitted.
“Montefilia was a good filly, but I think she stays better than Montefilia.
“I think Montefilia was maybe maximum 2000 metres.”
Given Montefilia won more than $4.5 million and captured elite-level races throughout her career, it is a notable assessment from the veteran trainer.
Lloyd Declares the World Is Her Oyster
Winning jockey Lloyd could hardly have been more impressed with the filly following what he considered her most dominant performance yet.
“That’s her easiest win today and it was in a Group 1,” the airborne hoop said.
“She is a beauty, just tries her hardest.”
Lloyd said he was confident a long way from home that the race was effectively over once he secured the position he wanted.
“When I got outside the lead pretty comfortably, I knew it was going to be awfully hard to get to her and then also get past her,” he added.
The talented hoop believes her unbeaten run deserves enormous respect.
“It’s so hard to do what she has done to win five in a row,” he said.
“The world is her oyster.”
Race Over After 400 Metres
Lloyd admitted he felt the filly had the race under control remarkably early.
“To be fair after about 400 metres I thought it was game over,” he said.
“I have a lot of faith in her.
“I knew how tough she was last start.
“The fact she was a length or two in front of the main rivals was always going to mean she was the strongest late.”
That confidence proved justified as Proxima Dea quickly established a winning break and never looked in danger.
Oaks Favourite Emerges
Saturday’s Spring Champion Stakes has traditionally proven one of the most reliable staying form references for elite three-year-olds, and Proxima Dea’s performance suggested the VRC Oaks now looms as her ideal target.
The manner in which she saw out the 2000 metres, combined with her staying pedigree and relentless racing style, indicates the rise to 2500 metres could be exactly what she is looking for.
Bookmakers agree.
Following her Group 1 breakthrough, Proxima Dea has been installed as the clear $2 favourite for the 2026 VRC Oaks, with punters convinced she is the outstanding staying filly of her generation.
Global Goal Brave in Defeat
Runner-up Global Goal lost no admirers in defeat after chasing gamely throughout.
Jockey Dylan Gibbons felt his mount produced a terrific effort despite being unable to reel in the winner.
“She couldn’t have gone any better,” he said.
“She left her heart out there at the 100-metre mark but the winner was just too good on the day.”
Meanwhile, third-placed Cormier enhanced his staying credentials according to rider Kerrin McEvoy.
“Really good,” he summed up post-race.
“Ran well out to this trip for the first time.
“He feels as though he will stay further.”
VRC Oaks Beckons
With five wins from five starts, a Group 1 trophy now in the cabinet and bookmakers scrambling to shorten her futures quote, Proxima Dea has rapidly emerged as one of the breakout stars of the spring carnival.
The unbeaten filly now heads towards Flemington with a chance to add another prestigious feature to her growing résumé and become the latest Sydney-trained star to capture the Crown Oaks.
On Saturday’s evidence, she’ll take plenty of beating.
Proxima Dea is the real deal, and the road to the 2026 VRC Oaks now runs through David Payne’s unbeaten staying sensation.
