Streama has survived a gutsy challenge by Sea Siren to win the Group 2 Surround Stakes at Warwick Farm today March 10, 2012.

The Surround Stakes is a quality Group 2 thoroughbred race held towards the start of the prestigious Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival on Chipping Norton Stakes Day at Warwick Farm in early March. It is one of four fantastic Group races at the meeting, the others are the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) and Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m).
Run over 1400m, the Surround Stakes is for three-year-old fillies at set weights and is worth $200,000. Fillies that previously contested the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) may be looking for a step up in distance here on their way to some of the more prestigious and lucrative three-year-old races at the carnival, including the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) the following week. The last filly to win the Light Fingers Stakes / Surround Stakes double was More Joyous in 2010.

First run in 1979 the Surround Stakes inaugural winner was Impede. The race began as a Group 3 event run over 1400m and although the distance has remained the same, the status of the event was elevated to its current Group 2 level in 1986. For one year in 1990 the Surround Stakes was downgraded to a Group 3 race again but regained Group 2 status the following year in 1991.
