The 2017 Tulloch Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-old colts & geldings contested over 2000m at Rosehill Gardens under set weights held midway through the illustrious Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival on The BMW Day.

The meeting is host to two Group 1 races – the $1.5 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) and the $500,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) – as well as a host of support acts including the Tulloch Stakes and the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) for the fillies & mares.

Offering $200,000 in total prize money the Tulloch Stakes serves as a key lead-up to the $2 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) contested at Royal Randwick a week later on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’. The last horse to complete the Tulloch Stakes – ATC Derby double was Starcraft (2004).

Horses may come into the Tulloch Stakes field via a number of earlier autumn lead-up races including the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) run at the same track a fortnight earlier on Coolmore Classic Day.

The Tulloch Stakes 2017 ran on Saturday Saturday March 25, 2017.

Tulloch Stakes History

First run in 1973 when Longfella claimed victory, the Tulloch Stakes began as a Principal race run over 1850m. In 1979 the race distance was increased to 2000m and the event was installed as a Group 2 race.

There have been a number of high quality horses to take out the Tulloch Stakes including Ivory’s Irish (1995), Mahogany (1994) and Durbridge (1991), all of which won the Tulloch Stakes/Australian Derby double.

More recent notable Tulloch Stakes winners include Hauraki (2015), and Count Encosta (2010).
