Named in honour of the former champion mare Emancipation, this Group Two race is a set weight race for fillies and mares. Emancipation was a mare which only raced as a three and four year old however her racing career was outstanding. She won 19 out of 28 starts and all seven of her Group One wins were at Sydney.

Run over a 1600m distance, the Emancipation Stakes is held at Randwick Racecourse on the last day of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival in April. The Sydney Cup day also features four Group One races including the Sydney Cup, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, All Aged Stakes and the Champagne Stakes.

The Emancipation Stakes 2012 will be run on Saturday April 28th, 2012.

Emancipation Stakes History:

First held in 1985, the Emancipation Stakes was first won by Aspirations when it was a Listed race. In 1996 it became a Group Three event until 1999 when it was elevated to Group Two status. Since its inauguration, 1 minute 34.52 seconds has been the record for the fastest winning time which was by Fantasia in 2006. The slowest winning time was 1 minute 45 seconds by Top Dance in 1990. R.S. Dye is the only jockey to have managed six wins in the event between years 1988 to 1999.
