The Five Diamonds race is a new Special Conditions feature offering $2 million in prize money and run at Rosehill on the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup each year.
The Five Diamonds is a brand new Special Conditions feature race held in early November during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.
Open only to five-year-old horses, the $2 million showdown runs at Rosehill Gardens as part of Golden Gift Day. The meeting takes place on the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup and runs on the same date as VRC Champions Stakes Day (formerly Mackinnon Stakes Day) at Flemington.
Along with the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) for two-year-olds, the other feature on the card is the Group 2 $500,000 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m).
The Five Diamonds took place for the first time in 2022 and was added to the Sydney spring line-up at the same time as the now $3 million The Big Dance (1600m), which runs on Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday of November each year.
In 2022 Sibaaq ran third in the first edition of The Big Dance before a second in The Five Diamonds results.
Run over 1800m, The Five Diamonds is run at set weights plus penalties and serves as a nice attraction for five-year-old horses that may otherwise have been retired.
The race also follows on from the $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) for four-year-olds run in the spring.
The $1 million Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) held at Rosehill in October on the same day as Melbourne’s Caulfield Cup Day card is the key lead-up into the race.
Ellsberg in 2022 became the inaugural winner of the Five Diamonds Prelude – The Five Diamonds race double.
He also won the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick earlier that spring.
The Five Diamonds 2022 form was franked with the third place-getter Laws Of Indices heading overseas next start to run third in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) that December.
The second edition of The Five Diamonds ran on Saturday November 11, 2023 at Rosehill on the same day as Melbourne’s VRC Champions Stakes Day at Flemington and was won in a late burst by the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Unspoken ($7.50).

Tipping a return to winning form from the Tony Gollan-trained Queenslander who comes into the lucrative feature on the back of successive second place efforts. The Redwood gelding was good with 58kg in early October winning the Group 3 Sandown Stakes before a devastatingly close second a nostril flare off Attrition from a wide alley (16) in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m). Just denied again in the Group 2 Crystal Mile by classy Kiwi raider Prowess when carrying 59kg. 57kg here has him well-weighted, gets a gun run from barrier two. Can win.
