The Caulfield Guineas is a Group 1 race for three-year-olds held in mid-October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Offering $3 million in prize money, the 1600m race attracts the best young milers and promising staying types of the season. The race is featured on a massive day of Group 1 racing alongside the Toorak Handicap (1600m) and Caulfield Stakes (2000m) now run as the Might And Power Stakes.

The Thousand Guineas (1600m) for the fillies was previously held on the same day but from 2023-24 ran in mid to late November on its own end-of-spring feature race meeting. In 2025 the Thousand Guineas has moved back to October taking place a week after the Caulfield Guineas on Caulfield Cup Day.

In 2026, Caulfield Guineas Day takes place the weekend before Sydney’s $20 million The Everest race.

As a set weights race, colts and geldings are required to carry 55.5kg while fillies must carry 53.5kg. The Caulfield Guineas is regarded as a good lead-up race to the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley and the last Guineas graduate to back-up and win the weight-for-age classic was Shamus Award (3rd) in 2013.

In 2024 the Caulfield Guineas runner-up, Feroce, went on to frank the form with an upset win in the following autumn’s Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington in 2025.

In 2025, Autumn Boy won the Caulfield Guineas in the spring before returning for a huge autumn in 2026 highlighted by his Group 1 Rosehill Guineas victory and second in the time-honoured Doncaster Mile. The 2025 Caulfield Guineas form was further franked by the third placed Observer who continued on to win his next four starts including that spring’s Victoria Derby and the 2026 Australian Guineas.
