The Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) could be calling for Anthony & Sam Freedman‘s progressive youngster American Eagle following his first-up win in the 2026 HDF McNeil Stakes results at Caulfield on Saturday.

The lightly raced Too Darn Hot colt won on debut in the wet at Sandown over the winter with Clayton Douglas before transferring to the Freedmans ahead of his return on Memsie Stakes Day in the Group 3 $200,000 HDF McNeil Stakes (1200m).
He was well-supported in the markets and rewarded the punters, albeit by a narrow margin, with just 0.15 lengths to spare on the line as the $3.20 favourite ahead of Unit Five with Seraphox third.
“It’s the time of year that you’re hoping to have horses like these, particularly colts go to these sorts of races,” co-trainer Sam Freedman told Racing Victoria post-victory.
“Anthony had a good opinion of this horse very early days up in Sydney, that’s been vindicated, the horse has come down here and shown class at home.
“He looks the real deal so hopefully he’ll keep getting better.”
Senior rider Mark Zahra came aboard for the progressive youngster’s first Group assignment with American Eagle quick out the gates before showing his greenness with a near fall.
To his credit, the youngster recovered quickly, found the lead and dug deep holding off the challenge from Ciaron Maher’s also resuming Magic Millions 2YO Classic champ Unit Five to get the job done in a photo thriller.
“He’s a very nice horse, he jumped really quick and then nearly fell over after that, but he picked himself up and I got to the front a fair way out, good job to battle on, he went again when the other horse came to me,” Zahra said.
“I thought I did (win) but then the camera man looked like he was going to the other horse but anyway, the result went my way.
“There’s a heap of improvement to come, he’s got a very bright Spring ahead of him.”
Looking ahead, Freedman said a Group 1 target was absolutely pending for the McNeil Stakes winner with the Caulfield Guineas over the mile on October 10 the likely target.
“Our plan was always to go to the Guineas Prelude (Group 3 on September 19), but I mean he’s pretty brilliant,” he said.
“He’s got a nice turn of foot, he can take up a spot. You’re aiming for either a Coolmore or a Guineas, but we’ll have a dust set and see how he pulls up.
“One thing I’d say as well, he’s won on soft ground in the winter, and it’s probably got a bit of give today, so still want to tick a box on firm ground but he’s progressive.”
Futures betting at Ladbrokes.com.au on the Caulfield Guineas 2026 have American Eagle as a huge firmer right in from triple-figures to $11.

If American Eagle fails to handle the extra distance, the team will pivot and instead target the Group 1 $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight on Derby Day, October 31.
“He’ll give himself a chance to run a mile if he want to go that way,” Freedman said.
“I thought he was knocking up probably the last 50, he was probably just ready for the six (furlongs) today. So, whether we push on, a Prelude, and then whether you pivot and you go to the Guineas or whether you go freshen and go to the Coolmore.”
Current early Coolmore Stud Stakes 2026 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on American Eagle have been slashed from $34 into $15.
Zahra however is nearly convinced the horse will see out the 1600m.
“I think so. He’s pretty sharp but he’s on the right path first up, you head that way and he’ll be on the right path,” he said.
“He’s still very green, he’s got a lot to learn but he’s very tractable, every race he’ll get better, when the grand final comes hopefully, he’s at his best.”
There’s also a chance American Eagle could head north to Sydney for the Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose (1400m) on September 26 giving him options galore depending on how he pulls up and trains on.
“For sure, you’ve got a Golden Rose there,” Freedman said.
“There’s probably more seasoned horses at that point in time going to that sort of race but the fact he can take up a spot I think is going to hold him in good stead once he gets out in trip if he does get to a mile in time and the 1400 is a nice stepping-stone so we’ve got some decisions to make.”
With the Golden Rose 2026 option still on the table, bookmakers at Ladbrokes.com.au were quick to react cutting the colt’s quote from $101 into $26.
