The 2023 WA Champion Fillies Stakes is a Group 3 race held at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse in mid-late November during the early stages of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

Held under set weights conditions, the WA Champion Fillies Stakes is a 1600m event restricted to three year old fillies. It’s worth $300,000, which makes it one of the more lucrative Group 3 events held at Ascot Racecourse.

The WA Champion Fillies Stakes is a feature event and shares a race program with the Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) and the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m), as well as the Listed $500,000 Placid Ark Stakes (1200m).

There aren’t really a host of leadup events to look to for this one, as many of the fillies come from non black-type backgrounds. However, the listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m), also held at Ascot, can sometimes provide a bit of an indication as to which fillies will perform well.

Keshi Boom (2023) was the last filly to complete the Burgess Queen Stakes – WA Champion Fillies Stakes double.

Earlier the 2021 WA Champion Fillies Stakes winner Searchin’ Roc’s improved on a lead-up second in the Burgess Queen.

Searchin’ Roc’s returned the following year on the same day to win the Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes.

Earlier, Arcadia Queen (2018) improved on a third in the Burgess Queen Stakes to win the WA Champion Fillies Classic. She then went on to beat the boys in the Group 2 WA Guineas and the older horses in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (now Northerly Stakes).

In 2019 the WA Champion Fillies winner Tuscan Queen came off a lead-up second in the Burgess Queen Stakes, while the upset 2020 winner Watch Me Dance improved off an unplaced Burgess Queen eighth to win the Group 3.

In 2022 the Burgess Queen Stakes winner Laced Up Heels finished a next-up second in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes results.

Following a run in the Champion Fillies Stakes, the Group 3 WA Oaks (2400m) is a fairly common target for the stronger fillies who can step up in distance. Other fillies might choose to take on the boys in the lucrative Group 2 $500,000 WA Guineas (1600m) a week later, a race Art Series (1st in 2017) backed-up to run third in and Arcadia Queen (2018) completed the double in.

In 2020 upset WA Champion Fillies Stakes winner Watch Me Dance went on to beat the boys in the WA Guineas next-up making her the latest to do the double.

The 2022 WA Champion Fillies Stakes winner Admiration Express went on to run third in the WA Oaks trifecta the following autumn.

The 2023 WA Champion Fillies Stakes ran on Saturday November 18, 2023 at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse and was won by the undefeated Grant & Alana Williams-trained Keshi Boom ($1.55F).

WA Champion Fillies Stakes History

The Champion Fillies Stakes was inaugurated in 1946, with Burabudy the first champion filly. It has always been a mile (or eight furlong) event. When the race was transferred from a Principal Race in 1979 it was granted Group 2 status. However, in 1997 it was downgraded to Group 3.

The Champion Fillies Stakes was held for a year in 2003 at Belmont Park Racecourse. Scheduling adjustments led to two editions of the race in 2011, one in February and one in November. There were also two editions in 2001.

Since its inception there have been two years in which the Champion Fillies Stakes was not run, 1977 and 2007.

Notable Champion Fillies Stakes winners include Roman Maid (1951), Lady Orator (1956), La Trice (1968), Queen Inca (1980), Zabanella (1994), Spirit Lady (2003), Catechuchu (2006), Miss Rose De Lago (2013), and Arcadia Queen (2018).
