The 2015 RJ Peters Stakes is a 1500m race held at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse early in the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

Held under handicap conditions, the RJ Peters Stakes is open to all horses aged three years and older. It pays $150,000 prize money, and is a popular target for middle distance handicappers.

The RJ Peters Stakes is held on Champion Fillies Day alongside the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m).

The horses which typically target the RJ Peters Stakes have their sights set on slightly longer feature events later in the summer, such as the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) or the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m). Of course, not all horses are up to the Group 1 challenge, and the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m) or the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) present decent challenges to the quality stayers.

Prior to the RJ Peters Stakes, the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) is often targeted by handier types who are looking to stay around the middle distance or possibly step up. The Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) held on the same day as Derby Day is another decent lead up event.

The 2015 RJ Peters Stakes will be run on November 14th.

RJ Peters Stakes History

The RJ Peters Stakes was inaugurated in 1905 as the WATC Plate and was initially run over six furlongs (approximately 1200m).

Initially a Principal race, the RJ Peters Stakes was granted Listed status in 1979. It retained this status until 1985 when it’s status was upgraded to Group 3.

The RJ Peters Stakes has been run under a number of monikers since it began, including the Budget Quality Cup and the Quality Stakes. Since 2000 it has held its current title, the RJ Peters Stakes.

It is named in honour of major Western Australian thoroughbred owner RJ Peters.

The RJ Peters Stakes was not held for the period of 1941-1944 due to World War II. In 1958 and 1959 it was not held.

It was run over six furlongs until 1972, when it was converted to 1200m. In 1979, it began to be run over 1400m. In 1998, this was increased to 1500m. With the exception of 2003 when it was held over 1600m, the RJ Peters Stakes has remained at 1500m.

Notable RJ Peters Stakes winners include Rustaff (1905), Golden Orb (1911), Prince Paladin (1928), Gay Gipsy (1935, 36), Shining Star (1951), Starglow (1973), Heron Bridge (1982), Northerly (2000) and Kerrific (2013). RJ Peters Stakes results, place getters and winning time are listed below.
