The 2015 Colonel Reeves Stakes is a Group 3 1100m sprint held at Ascot Racecourse in Perth.

The Colonel Reeves Stakes takes place on the same day as the Melbourne Cup in Flemington. Surprisingly, this results in a lot more focus on the Colonel Reeves Stakes, as those Western Australians who can’t make it to Flemington and still want to spend a day at the races head to Ascot.

A quality sprint for horses aged three years and older, the Colonel Reeves Stakes is the feature event on its race day and is also the only black-type event on the schedule.

With $150,000 prize money, the Colonel Reeves Stakes is certainly not the most lucrative race held at Ascot, however it is still an attractive purse for trainers who are returning their horses to work.

A fair proportion of those horses which target the Colonel Reeves Stakes do so following a spell, or after only one or two starts in a campaign. The Colonel Reeves Stakes is one of the earlier races held during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival. Often, horses will target the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) held a week before or the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m) in mid October on their way to the Colonel Reeves Stakes.

Following a successful run in this race, horses might go on to target the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) or the Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) with an eye on the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at the end of November.

The 2015 Colonel Reeves Stakes will be held on November 3rd.

Colonel Reeves Stakes History

The Colonel Reeves Stakes can trace its origins to 1984, when it was taken out by Heron Bridge. In 2005 the Colonel Reeves Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 status, which it retains today.

Usually held at Ascot Racecourse, for one year in 2003 the Colonel Reeves Stakes was run at Belmont Park. It wasn’t held in 1993 and 1995. In 1994, there were two editions of the race, in December and in January.

The race has been known by a few other names during its time, such as the WATC Bart Cummings Stakes and the Channel Nine Stakes.

Revolition (2009) holds the race record for this event at 1:03.6, with Ma Ma Machine equalling that time in 2010.

Notable Colonel Reeves Stakes winners include Heron Bridge (1984, 1988), Scouts Honour (1998), Lady Belvedere (2001), Danny Beau (2008) and Barakey (2012). Notable losers include Hay List, who went into the 2009 Colonel Reeves Stakes as favourite on the back of eight straight victories and then missed out on the top three.
