The 2017 Colonel Reeves Stakes is a Group 3 1100m sprint held at Ascot Racecourse in Perth in mid-November each season.

The Colonel Reeves Stakes takes place alongside the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Classic (1600m) and the Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) during the early stages of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

A quality sprint for horses aged three years and older, the $150,000 Colonel Reeves Stakes is a key lead-up to the following Saturday’s Group 1 $1 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m). Barakey (2012) was the last sprinter to complete the Colonel Reeves Stakes – Winterbottom Stakes double.

The Colonel Reeves Stakes is one of the earlier races held during the Perth Festival of Racing. Often horses will target the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) held a fortnight earlier or the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m) in late October on their way to the Colonel Reeves Stakes.

The 2017 Colonel Reeves Stakes ran on Saturday November 18, 2017 and was won by the odds-on favourite State Solicitor.

Colonel Reeves Stakes History

The Colonel Reeves Stakes can trace its origins to 1984, when it was taken out by Heron Bridge. In 2005 the Colonel Reeves Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 status, which it retains today.

Usually held at Ascot Racecourse, for one year in 2003 the Colonel Reeves Stakes was run at Belmont Park. It wasn’t held in 1993 and 1995. In 1994, there were two editions of the race, in December and in January.

The race has been known by a few other names during its time, such as the WATC Bart Cummings Stakes and the Channel Nine Stakes.

Revolition (2009) holds the race record for this event at 1:03.6, with Ma Ma Machine equalling that time in 2010.

Notable Colonel Reeves Stakes winners include Heron Bridge (1984, 1988), Scouts Honour (1998), Lady Belvedere (2001), Danny Beau (2008) and Barakey (2012). Notable losers include Hay List, who went into the 2009 Colonel Reeves Stakes as favourite on the back of eight straight victories and then missed out on the top three.
