The Tulloch Stakes is an exciting Group 2 race held midway through the illustrious Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival on the famous Golden Slipper Day in early April. Golden Slipper Day is the richest and most anticipated race meeting of the Sydney Autumn Carnival, featuring an incredible five Group 1 races including the Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), The BMW (2400m), Arrowfield Stud Stakes (2000m), George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m).

The Tulloch Stakes is the final Group status race of the day at the Rosehill Gardens racecourse. Run over the middle-distance of 2000m, it is for three-year-old colts and geldings at set weights and offers $175,000 in prizemoney. Held one week before the Group 1 AJC Derby (2400m) at Randwick, the Tulloch Stakes gives three-year-old males one last run over 2000m to prepare for the feature event. Over the years the Tulloch Sakes has been a decent guide to the AJC Derby and the last horse to take out both races was Starcraft in 2004.

The Tulloch Stakes 2012 will be run on Saturday April 7th, 2012.

Tulloch Stakes History:

First run in 1973 when Longfella claimed victory, the Tulloch Stakes began as a Principal race run over 1850m. In 1979 the race distance was increased to 2000m and the event was installed as a Group 2 race.

There have been a number of high quality horses to take out the Tulloch Stakes including Ivory’s Irish (1995), Mahogany (1994) and Durbridge (1991), all of which won the Tulloch Stakes/AJC Derby double.
