2017 Crystal Mile Results: Lucky Hussler Scores Easy Win

The Darren Weir-trained comeback galloper Lucky Hussler returned to winning form suited to a hot pace in the Crystal Mile 2017 on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day at The Valley. The eight-year-olds on of Husson hadn’t won since November of 2016, but was too good for his rivals in today’s Group 2 $200,000 Schweppes Crystal Mile…

Held at Moonee Valley Racecourse in late October as part of Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day, the Crystal Mile is a key mile race at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Worth $200,000 in prize money, the weight-for-age showdown attracts a strong group of milers which can tackle the 1600m distance. Many of these horses will come via the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and will go on to compete in the Group 1 Kennedy Mile (1600m) held a week later on Victoria Derby Day. Turn Me Loose (2015) was the last horse to complete the Crystal Mile – VRC Cantala Stakes (now the Kennedy Mile) double.

The Crystal Mile is one of seven Group status races held at The Valley at the meeting that is headlined by the Group 1 $3 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m).

The 2017 Crystal Mile took place on Saturday October 28, 2017 as part of Cox Plate Day at Moonee Valley.

2017 Crystal Mile Tips

  • 1st: #1 It’s Somewhat
  • 2nd: #3 Burning Front
  • 3rd: #2 Lucky Hussler

It’s a wide open race and anything could win, but have a feeling second-up the improver will be IT’S SOMEWHAT ($5). Challenging for favouritism despite this being his first look at the notorious Moonee Valley track. Won the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) in Sydney over the autumn during a string of wins and can return to form second-up after giving weight away in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (10th) first-up. Record two runs in is solid, right metres and gets things his way from the inside alley with Kerrin McEvoy coming aboard. BURNING FRONT ($5) can run on late off a likely hot pace and is on the quick turnaround after the good Moonga Stakes second at Caulfield last time out. Relishes the return to 1600m (14: 7-2-2) for the first time since a Group 3 Adelaide win in May and loves The Valley (5:3-1-0). LUCKY HUSSLER ($6.50) is the other Darren Weir-trained runner who can be forgiven for the luckless run at Caulfield on October 14. Got caught up and carried 61.5kg. Better at WFA over a mile and has upside.

Crystal Mile History

First raced in 1982 and won by Getting Closer, the Crystal Mile was originally titled the “Waterford Crystal Mile” however in 2007 it changed sponsors and is now named the “Patinack Farm Crystal Mile”. Originally a Listed race, the Crystal Mile was elevated to Group 3 status in 1986 and became a Group 2 race in 1997. The event has only been won twice by one horse named Weasel Will in 2000 and 2001. 1 minute 33.2 seconds is the record for the fastest winning time (since 1988) by Ark Regal in 1990 whereas Niconero holds the slowest time record for his 2005 win with 1 minute 39.4 seconds.
