Ranvet Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Ranvet Stakes 2026 Tips and Same Race Multi Selections on the million-dollar Slipper Day showdown this autumn.

Ranvet Stakes News

The Ranvet Stakes is a quality Group 1 race conducted by the Australian Turf Club (ATC) as part of the premier racing carnival in New South Wales, the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Held midway through the Autumn Carnival in late March on Golden Slipper Stakes Day at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, this weight-for-age staying event run over 2000m is worth $1,000,000 in total prize money as of 2023.

Golden Slipper Stakes Day features an incredible five Group 1 races with the running of the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m), the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), and the Ranvet Stakes.

Many horses in the Ranvet Stakes field many have had an earlier autumn lead-up in Sydney in a race like the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (formerly Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in late February.

Contributer (2015), the ill-fated Verry Elleegant (2021), and Chris Waller’s Cox Plate winning mare Via Sistina (2025) are the last horses to complete the Chipping Norton/Verry Elleegant – Ranvet Stakes double.

Some runners may come into the race via a Melbourne run earlier in the season such as the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) that takes place at Flemington the Saturday before. Manighar (2012) was the last Australian Cup – Ranvet Stakes interstate double winner. In 2018, Gailo Chop improved on a lead-up second in the Australian Cup as the beaten favourite there to salute for the punters in the Ranvet Stakes results.

The 2019 Ranvet Stakes winner Avilius meanwhile improved on a lead-up fifth in the Australian Cup the start prior.

Runners in the Ranvet Stakes may continue their autumn campaign in other high-status events like the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) – now known as the Tancred Stakes – run a week later at Rosehill. Plenty of The BMW / Tancred Stakes winners had their final lead-up in the Ranvet Stakes including Silent Achiever (2014) who recently achieved the double, and Avilius (2019) who also took out the Ranvet – Tancred Stakes double. The Ranvet Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Tancred Stakes and so punters are always keen to watch this race in anticipation of their Tancred Stakes bets.

The other key autumn feature for weight-for-age horses out of the Ranvet Stakes is the Group 1 $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) held at Randwick during ‘The Championships’ in April.

In 2021 Addeybb returned to defend his title in the Ranvet Stakes, eventually finishing second behind last year’s runner-up Verry Elleegant who reversed the results in a thrilling battle.

In 2023 UK horseman William Haggas returned to win another Ranvet Stakes trophy with smart raider Dubai Honour winning by over four lengths.

Addeybb (2020) and Dubai Honour (2023) are the latest horses to complete the Ranvet Stakes – Queen Elizabeth Stakes double.

Verry Elleegant would go on to frank the Ranvet Stakes field in 2021 winning a number of other races, most notably that spring’s Melbourne Cup.

As the first weight-for-age event of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival run over 2000m, the Ranvet Stakes attracts a quality field of classy gallopers. Noteworthy Ranvet Stakes winners include Grand Armee (2005), Tie The Knot (2000 & 2001), Veandercross (1993), Super Impose (1991), and Better Loosen Up (1990).

In 2022 Verry Elleegant returned to defend her title as the odds-on favourite only to run second to Montefilia in an upset.

The Ranvet Stakes winner also earns an exemption from the Tancred Stakes, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Sydney Cup.

The 2024 Ranvet Stakes form was firmly franked with the winner Via Sistina continuing on to run second in the Queen Elizabeth before returning for an enormous spring that included victories in the Winx Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Cox Plate that she won by eight lengths, and Champions Stakes.

Via Sistina returned to defend her title in the 2025 Ranvet Stakes results going back-to-back in the event for the first time since Theseo (2009 & 2010).

Via Sistina then franked the Ranvet form in 2025 winning four subsequent Group 1 races before her retirement including the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the spring’s Cox Plate – Champions Stakes double.

Ranvet Stakes History

The Ranvet Stakes was first run in 1903 and won by Great Scot. It began as a principal race run over nine furlongs and was known as the Rawson Stakes. In 1963 the race distance was decreased to eight furlongs until it was converted into 1750 meters in 1973. A few years later in 1979 the distance was increased to its current length of 2000m. The following year in 1980 the event was elevated to Group 1 status.

In 1988 the race changed its name to the Segenhoe Stakes until 1991 when it became registered as the Ranvet Stakes as Ranvet took over sponsorship of the race.

Theseo won the Ranvet Stakes twice in a row, in 2009 and again in 2010.

Zavite caused the biggest upset in the event’s history when he led all the way in 2011 as a 100 to 1 hope.

Other notable recent Ranvet Stakes winners include next-up Queen Elizabeth champion in UK raider Addeybb (2020), Contributer (2015), and Silent Achiever (2014).

In 2021 the original Golden Slipper Stakes race day including the Ranvet Stakes was abandoned due to heavy rainfall and unsafe track conditions and postponed to the following Saturday.

A second international win took place in 2023 with the UK’s William Haggas training the runaway champ Dubai Honour.

In 2024 Viva Sistina won the Ranvet Stakes in her first Australian start with the imported mare on debut for Chris Waller ahead of her historic eight-length Cox Plate success that spring in Melbourne.

Via Sistina (2024-25) is the latest dual Ranvet Stakes winner and latest mare to win the event.
