Named after the Australian Racing Hall of Fame horse Kingston Town, the 1800m Kingston Town Classic is the second biggest race in the Perth Summer Racing Carnival. Held at Ascot Racecourse in December, the weight-for-age race is worth half a million dollars in prize money.

The 2010 Kingston Town Classic will be run on Saturday 4 December 2010 at Ascot Racecourse in Perth.

The best lead-up races to the event are the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m), Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) and the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m). Many horses go on to race in the Group 2 CB Cox Stakes (2100m).

Kingston Town Classic History

First raced in 1976 and won by Family Of Man, the Kingston Town Classic has undergone plenty of name changes. Starting with the Marlboro 50,000, the event then went on to be named the Western Mail Classic, Rothwells Stakes, Winfield Stakes, Beat Diabetes 2 Stakes and Fruit ‘N’ Veg Stakes. In 2007 it was officially named the Kingston Town Classic after the great horse’s victory in 1982.

Summer Beau won the race in two consecutive years in 1996 and 1997 and Old Comrade followed in 2000 and 2001. Niconero managed to win the Classic twice in 2006 and 2008 as did the race’s first winner Family Of Man in 1976 and 1978. The race’s distance was changed to 1600m in 1999 to 2000 and again to 2000m in 2003. Since 1980, the fastest recorded winning time over 1800m was Niconero in 2008 with 1 minute 46.9 seconds. The slowest winning time over 1800m was recorded in 2002 by Blevvo with 1 minute 52.1 seconds.
