Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2017 Odds: Houtzen Back on Top

Last Saturday’s impressive Gold Coast winning filly Houtzen has returned to the top of the 2017 Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds for her second run at the track on Saturday despite drawing the outside alley in the Restricted Listed feature.

From Within

Due to run as Gold Coast Race 8 at 3:55pm (AEST), a capacity field of juveniles runs in the $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) including the local Toby Edmonds-trained Houtzen.

She drew gate 21 at the Magic Millions 2YO Classic barrier draw on Tuesday and will jump from barrier 16 of 16 once the emergencies come out.

Jeff Lloyd has the task of getting the undefeated daughter of I Am Invincible into a forward position from the nasty alley when he rides Houtzen for the third time.

“The only good thing about the barrier draw is she won’t be getting flattened from horses inside and outside of her and we can actually have a good look inside of her,” Edmonds told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

“But it makes her job very hard now. She can still win but it’s going to be very difficult.”

Lloyd rode her for a four length win on debut at Doomben on December 24 and again for an effortless four and a half-length romp home at the Gold Coast over 1100m last Saturday.

On the quick back-up Houtzen should be rock hard fit and drops from 58kg to 55kg under the set weights conditions of the Magic Millions Classic.

After barriers were allocated she eased out in Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, but has since firmed back into $3.90 favouritism to become the first filly to beat home the boys in the race since Real Surreal (2013).

Real Surreal (2013) was the last filly to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic

Close second favourite in the latest Magic Millions 2YO Classic odds at $4 is the Chris Waller-trained From Within drawn in barrier seven, into four if the emergencies fail to gain a start.

Hugh Bowman rides the daughter of Not A Single Doubt chasing his third Magic Millions Classic win after victories aboard Mimi Lebrock (2007) and Bradbury’s Luck (2005).

Bowman replaces Glyn Schofield in the saddle, Schofield having ridden the filly on debut for her 1100m Canterbury win on December 31.

While no Magic Millions Classic winner has done so at just their second career run, Edmonds rates Waller’s chance From Within a danger on the weekend.

“Obviously, From Within has good ability but it has one start in a five-horse field,” he said.

“It’s got to be everything they think it is but there is no reason why it couldn’t win.”

The big Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting market mover post-barrier draw backed in from $7.50 to $6.50 is the Chris Munce-trained Ours To Keep in gate four.

“Chris Munce’s horse has another soft draw, which is good for him. Good luck to him,” Edmonds added.

“I’d say his horse is the horse to beat from the barrier.”

A winner of all three of his starts so far, the Seidnazar colt is a dual stakes champ already having completed the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes – Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Plate double in December.

Damian Browne rides Ours To Keep for the fourth time having been aboard for the two summer black-types as well as the youngster’s eye-catching four length win on debut from October 1.

Rounding out the single-figure Magic Millions Classic chances this summer are the rails-drawn Wyong Magic Millions Classic winning filly Madeenaty ($7.50) for Lindsay Park and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Invincible Star ($8) whose only run to date was a Group 3 Flemington win on Melbourne Cup Day.
