Belle Of The Turf Stakes 2017 Field Released

The week’s sole Group status race is Friday’s 2017 Belle Of The Turf Stakes running on Gosford Gold Cup Day on the New South Wales Central Coast.

A final field of thirteen fillies and mares is engaged for the $150,000 Group 3 Gosford RSL Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m), running as Race 4 at 3:10pm (AEDT).

In-form Warwick Farm horseman Bjorn Baker has dual represented in the Belle Of The Turf Stakes field this summer with Imposing Lass and Sewreel in barriers 12 and five respectively.

Of the duo, Makfi four-year-old Imposing Lass looks a genuine chance after her second over 1400m at her home track on January 7.

She’s on the quick back-up but has a consistent career record of four wins, two seconds and a third from her ten starts to date.

Her latest win was in May last year at the Gold Coast when she took out the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m), which led to her Group 2 The Roses (2000m) second at Doomben and sixth in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m).

Third-up this week getting up to a mile should suit, the only concern being the rise from only 50.5kg last start to 58kg in Friday’s handicap clash.

Also coming off a good lead-up run into the Belle Of The Turf Stakes and up in the weights with 58.5kg is the Luke Oliver-trained Khutulun.

Damien Oliver rides the Soldier’s Tale six-year-old whose last start produced a close third when only a quarter-length beaten by the winner Kenjorwood in Caulfield’s Listed Lord Stakes (1700m) on Boxing Day.

The Belle Of The Turf Stakes weights are led this season by the Chris Waller-trained All Cerise (59kg) who hasn’t won a race since February last year over the Flemington mile.

She has been finishing at the tail ends of her past six races including her last start eighth of nine runners behind Loyalty Man at Canterbury over 1550m on New Year’s Eve.

Waller has also accepted for Harlem Lady, the Zabeel five-year-old shaping-up as a far better hope for Sydney’s leading horseman.

She finished only one and a quarter-lengths back for fourth over 1400m at Warwick Farm last Saturday carrying 58.5kg and will relish the drop in weights to 56kg from gate two with Glyn Schofield riding on Friday.

Also drawing well are the likes of Port Macquarie Cup winner Sofin (4) who comes off a fourth in December’s Coffs Harbour Cup over a mile and the flying Mark Newnham-trained Anisha (3) who won back-to-back summer races before her second on January 2 over the Randwick mile carting 59.5kg.

High Chaparral five-year-old Anisha is not only drawn well for the Group 3 this week, but she also comes right down in weight to the 54kg minimum and should be flying.

Other notable final acceptors include the Clarry Conners-trained Not A Single Doubt four-year-old Queen Of Wands and Jason Coyle’s Curlin four-year-old All In The Reflexes.
