The Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a 1600m middle-distance event held at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day in late October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Open only to three-year-old fillies, the set weights showdown is worth $200,000 in total prize money and makes a nice lead-up to the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) the following weekend at Flemington on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The headline race at the meeting is the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), while the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is one of the six other Group races on the card making for an ace day for the punters.

Many fillies in the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field come via a run in either the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) held at Flemington three weeks before or the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield two weeks before Cox Plate Day.

The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic 2017 ran on Saturday October 28, 2017 .

2017 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Tips

  • 1st: #2 Banish
  • 2nd: #3 Glam Guru
  • 3rd: #8 Touch Of Mink

BANISH ($5.50) is drawn wide (11 of 11) but remains value coming off the BM70 win against the older mares over 1400m at Cranbourne a fortnight ago. She wasn’t disgraced at this track finishing mid-field sixth under two lengths off the winner Shoals in the Listed Atlantic Jewel earlier and looks like she’ll run out a mile with Craig Williams retaining the ride. Also finished ahead of subsequent Thousand Guineas winner Aloisia (5th) when third at Caulfield on September 23, so nice form lines. GLAM GURU ($8.50) represents a bit of value, Damien Oliver riding the Adelaide visitor who comes off a lead-up second at home over 1800m. She’s only won up to 1300m to date, but gets the chance to return to better form dropping back in distance for this and is a chance at odds. TOUCH OF MINK ($13) could prove overs having shown some ability in Sydney and likely ready for a mile after finishing a length away fifth in a Listed 1400m at Randwick on The Everest Day.

2017 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Field

Each spring the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field attracts a quality line-up of three-year-old fillies coming off lead-up races such as the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) the Saturday before on Caulfield Cup Day or Flemington’s Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at the start of the month. The best fillies out of the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field may back-up against the older mares in the following weekend’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m), a race the 2016 MV Fillies Classic third placegetter I Am A Star won next start.

The official Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Field is released on the Wednesday leading up to Cox Plate Day and will be published in full below.

The 2017 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic Final Field has drawn 11 hopefuls including Godolphin’s last start Cranbourne winner Banish to be ridden from the outside barrier by Craig Williams. Glam Guru is racing consistently at home in Adelaide and comes to Melbourne for the first time this spring, while the other Godolphin runner in the mix Speedway gets her chance from the inside alley with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle of last weekend’s Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) fifth placegetter.

Moonee Valley Fillies Classic History

Also known as the Woodstock Mile, Woodstock Classic, Hollylodge Classic, and the Moonee Valley Oaks, the race is now regarded by many as the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic. The first race in 1998 resulted in a dead heat between the two winners; Kensington Palace and Champagne. The race date was shifted from March to October in 2012, resulting in two editions for that year.

Originally a Listed race in 1998, the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic quickly became a Group 3 event in 1999 until 2000 and then changed to Group 2 status in 2001. Up until 2004, the race was a stayer’s event over a 2040 distance. It was then reduced to a mile in 2005 and then to 1500m in 2006. In 2010 the Moonee Valley Oaks race distance was changed to 1600m.

Notable Moonee Valley Fillies Classic winners include Sunline (1999), Lights Of Heaven (2011) and My Poppette (2015). The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic results since 2000 are detailed below.
