The Group 1 Thousand Guineas on November 16 is calling for the untapped Team Hayes-trained Double Market ($5.50) who backed up from a successful debut at Ballarat to dominate the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic 2024 results on Cox Plate Day, relaxing beautifully out the back for jockey Michael Dee after she was slow away before powering home to run down her rivals and salute by three quarters of a length.

Open only to three-year-old fillies, the set weights showdown is worth $300,000 in total prize money and makes a nice lead-up to the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) the following weekend at Flemington on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The headline race at the meeting is the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), while the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is one of the other Group races on the card making for an ace day for the punters.

The favourites have a great record in this race but think the 2024 Fillies Classic at The Valley will be won in an upset by former New Zealander Foreverintime who looks way overs at 20/1 at time of publish. The daughter of Written Tycoon is nicely bred and is now with Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman. She was Group 1 performed without disgrace across the Tasman back in March. Her form down under has been a little hit and miss and she is yet to win over further than 1100m but I actually think she’s been crying out for a mile. Has form around smart filly Bellatrix Star who won the Group 2 Schillaci from earlier this prep and her latest was an improved second over 1500m at Mornington. Can surprise.

Each spring the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field attracts a quality line-up of three-year-old fillies coming off lead-up races such as the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes (2000m) the Saturday before on Caulfield Cup Day or Flemington’s Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at the start of the month.

The best fillies out of the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic field may back-up against the older mares in the following weekend’s Group 1 Empire Rose Classic (1600m), a race the 2016 MV Fillies Classic third placegetter I Am A Star won next start.

The 2024 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic final field features a quality line-up three-year-olds led in betting by the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Cavity Bay coming off a Black-Type placing at Morphettville.

Moonee Valley Fillies Classic History

Also known as the Woodstock Mile, Woodstock Classic, Hollylodge Classic, and the Moonee Valley Oaks, the race is now regarded by many as the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic. The first race in 1998 resulted in a dead heat between the two winners; Kensington Palace and Champagne. The race date was shifted from March to October in 2012, resulting in two editions for that year.

Originally a Listed race in 1998, the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic quickly became a Group 3 event in 1999 until 2000 and then changed to Group 2 status in 2001. Up until 2004, the race was a stayer’s event over a 2040 distance. It was then reduced to a mile in 2005 and then to 1500m in 2006. In 2010 the Moonee Valley Oaks race distance was changed to 1600m.

In 2019 the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic resulted in a dead-heat between Fascino and La Falaise.

Notable Moonee Valley Fillies Classic winners include Sunline (1999), Lights Of Heaven (2011), My Poppette (2015), and Mystic Journey (2018) who went on to win the Australian Guineas – All-Star Mile double in the autumn.
