Past Cox Plate Results
If you are looking to bet on the Cox Plate, think about checking out past Cox Plate results.
Contenders often return to compete in the Cox Plate more than once, as the race is open to any thoroughbred over the age of three, so you can occasionally bet on runners who have previously performed in the same event – and you can predict their performance by researching their previous Cox Plate results.
You can also use past Cox Plate results when calculating your selections chances in other events, by comparing the race distance and the track conditions. Most horses have a favourite distance, and many prefer certain track conditions to others, so horses doing well in the Cox Plate can also do well in races with similar characteristics.
Cox Plate Winners
Cox Plate winners have in the past gone on to compete very successfully in the Melbourne Cup. The most recent example is legendary runner Makybe Diva, who won the 2005 Cox Plate before going on to win the 2005 Melbourne Cup, her third (and last) consecutive Melbourne Cup victory.
Cox Plate history was made in 2014 when the then Aidan O’Brien-trained Adelaide became the first international Cox Plate winner trained outside of Australia or New Zealand. In 2019 the Japanese-trained mare Lys Gracieux joined Adelaide as the only Cox Plate winners trained outside of Australia / New Zealand. In 2021 Aidan O’Brien’s son Joseph O’Brien prepared another international Cox Plate winner with Irish galloper State Of Rest surviving a protest to claim Australia’s greatest race.
In 2013 the Cox Plate winner Shamus Award also made the history books when breaking his maiden status in the classic.
There have been many notable dual Cox Plate winners including Phar Lap, Flight, Sunline and So You Think. Kingston Town was the only triple Cox Plate winner, a feat Winx emulated (2015-17).
Winx went on to become arguably the greatest Cox Plate winner of all time when her 2018 success saw her become history’s only four-time champion. She first made Cox Plate history in 2015 setting a race record but blitzed her own record with her third success in 2017. Winx also made the history books in 2016 setting the eight-length winning margin record in the ‘Race Where Champions Are Made’.
Rising Fast (1954) is the only horse to win the Cox Plate in the same year as completing the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double.
In 2024 the Cox Plate results saw the Chris Waller-trained Via Sistina equal the eight-length winning margin of her former stablemate Winx when surpassing her Cox Plate record winning in 2 minutes 01.07 seconds.
