The Australasian Oaks, also registered as the Schweppes Oaks, is a Group 1 race run over 2000m at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide. Held in May during the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival, the set weights race is open to three-year-old fillies and runs on Robert Sangster Stakes Day.

Offering $500,000 in prize money the Australasian Oaks is also a nice lead-up to the Queensland Oaks held in Brisbane during the winter carnival in June and the key Schweppes Oaks lead-up is the Group 3 Schweppervescence Auraria Stakes (1800m) held at Morphettville in late April.

Egg Tart (2017) was the last filly to complete the Schweppes Oaks – Queensland Oaks interstate double.

The 2018 Australasian Oaks ran on Saturday May 5, 2018 and was won by the Darren Weir-trained Sopressa.

Australasian Oaks History

The Australasian Oaks is a relatively new race which was first held in 1982. The first winner of the race was Rose Of Kingston, the dam to Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule. The race is known for producing great staying horses with many going on to place well in the Caulfield Cup. 2008 winner Zarita went on to beat the colts and geldings in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m), which is held during the same carnival.

Plenty of nice types have won the race including Lights Of Heaven (2011) and Delicacy (2015) who came off wins in the WA Oaks and WA Derby, and who also won that year’s SA Derby.
