2017 Chief De Beers Field & Odds: Top Two Hard to Split

One of the early black-type features on the Doomben Cup Day card in Brisbane on Saturday is the short-distance specialists in the Chief De Beers 2017 field, betting a tight battle between two smart sprinters.

Hidden Pearl

Set to run as Doomben Race 3 at 1:21pm (AEST), the $100,000 Listed Chief De Beers (1050m) handicap clash will feature a capacity field including first emergency Destiva who comes in for the early withdrawal Banda Spice.

In a close Chief De Beers betting affair at Ladbrokes.com.au six of the hopefuls are under $10 for the win including Hidden Pearl ($4.80) and Prompt Return ($5) fighting for favouritism.

Hidden Pearl has work to do from the second widest alley on the weekend, but that hasn’t deterred the bookies keeping her safe in the markets.

The six-year-old mare is second-up on the weekend after running second at the Gold Coast over 900m last time out.

She has outstanding Doomben form with three wins and a third from four previous starts at the track and is undefeated with a two-from-two record over the 1050m here.

In the Bat Out Of Hell race a fortnight back Hidden Pearl carried 58kg and was beaten by Prompt Return who had 55.5kg.

This time around Hidden Pearl drops to 56.6kg, while her last start conqueror Prompt Return rises to 56kg evening the two out in the weights.

The Toby Edmonds-trained Beneteau four-year-old Prompt Return still shapes-up as a danger chasing the back-to-back wins this campaign.

He too has plenty of good form at the Doomben track (3-2-1-0) where he races for the first time since a victory over Too Good To Refuse in November last year and Jeff Lloyd retains the ride on the consistent gelding.

Third elect in the latest Chief De Beers odds at $6.50 is the Joe Pride-trained Mr Manhattan from Sydney.

A gun over the distance (8-4-1-1), Pride’s lightly-raced Manhattan Rain five-year-old is in Brisbane for the first time on the weekend having his 14th career start.

This is his first run since the first week of January and Mr Manhattan is a proven first-up performer who boasts three wins and two seconds from five resuming runs to date, a record he looked like he could add to with a winning Kembla Grange trial on May 10.

Next best in betting at $8 is the fellow Edmonds-trained The Virginian from the Gold Coast.

A nicely-bred four-year-old son of Hinchinbrook, Saturday is the first Doomben assignment for the horse best known for his brave third as an $81 roughie in last winter’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

He hasn’t won since May last year, but enjoyed a three length 1050m trial in the wet at Deagon on May 9 leading-up to his fresh run this Saturday with Jim Byrne to ride.

Rounding out the single figure fancies are the James Cummings-trained market mover Tempt Me Not ($9) and the 59kg top weight Mount Nebo ($9.50) from the Wyong stables of Allan Denham who is undefeated at Doomben Racecourse.
