The 2016 Lee Steere Classic is a Listed event held during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival in early December.

Held at Perth’s premier racing venue, Ascot Racecourse, the Lee Steere Classic is a 1400m race for three years olds, run under set weights.

Worth $100,000, the race is targeted by some of Western Australia’s classier three year olds.

Held on Kingston Town Classic Day, the Lee Steere Classic shares a race program with the $1 million Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) as well as the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m) for fillies and mares.

Most of the young horses which contest the Lee Steere Classic have already had a few starts during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival. The Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) is a relatively popular lead up race, with quite a few horses appearing in the results for both events in recent years.

Following their run in the Lee Steere Classic, many horses head to the paddock for a spell before Autumn and Winter.

The 2016 Lee Steere Classic will be run on December 3rd.

Lee Steere Classic History

The Lee Steere Classic was inaugurated in 1983 and has since grown into one of Ascot’s most important races for three year olds.

It is named in remembrance of Ernest Henry Lee-Steere, a well known businessman and veteran who chaired the Western Australian Turn Club for over two decades, between 1963 and 1984.

Between 1983 and 1985 the Lee Steere Classic was a Listed event, receiving an upgrade to Group 3 status in 1986. It held that status up until 2015 and was downgraded back to a Listed race for the 2016 edition.

Usually held at Ascot, for a year in 2003 the Lee Steere Classic was hosted at Belmont Park Racecourse.

Notable Lee Steere Classic winners include Corona Miss (1983), Placid Ark (1987), Discussion (1994), Stormy Nova (2005) and Petrol Power (2013). Lee Steere Classic results, place getters and winning times since 2000 are provided below.
