The 2023 Bletchingly Stakes is a 1200m sprint race contested at Caulfield Racecourse in late July towards the end of the winter racing season.

Run under weight-for-age conditions, the Bletchingly Stakes attracts gallopers at the tail-end of their winter campaigns and also makes a nice early starting point for sprinters tracking towards the tougher upcoming races held during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Worth a total of $200,000 prize money as of 2022, the Bletchingly Stakes field often features runners that had a lead-up run in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at the same Caulfield track a fortnight earlier. Rubitano in 2002 was the last sprinter to do the Sir John Monash Stakes – Bletchingly Stakes double in the same year, but there have been a number of other horses to win both races on separate racing seasons.

Horses that race in the Bletchingly Stakes often progress onto other events such as the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) in mid-August or even the opening elite level race of the spring – the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m).

Shoot Out (2010) completed the Bletchingly Stakes – P.B. Lawrence Stakes double, while in 2018 the Bletchingly Stakes was won by the previous season’s Memsie Stakes winner Vega Magic (2017). The following year, Scales Of Justice (2019) took out the Bletchingly – Memsie double.

The 2022 Bletchingly Stakes form was franked with the winner King Of Sparta returning in the summer of 2023 to win the $1 million Magic Millions Sprint at the Gold Coast. The third-placed mare Mariamia further franked the form winning the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) in Sydney in the summer – autumn of 2023.

The 2023 Bletchingly Stakes ran on Saturday July 22, 2023 as a potential lead-up to the Group 1 spring races later in the year and was won by the Godolphin-raced Ingratiating ($4).

  • To Win: #6 It’sourtime ($5 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Wide open edition of the Bletchingly but happy to stick with the in-form It’sourtime. Would be shorter if this was run down the straight at HQ, but his Caulfield form is still strong (6:0-3-2). Danny O’Brien’s Time For War five-year-old has plenty of form over the distance (8:2-5-0) and is racing well. Last start Flemington winner in the Listed All Victorian Sprint Final. Up in grade but is a multiple Group place-getter and Group 1 performed. WFA is a test, but he’s going good enough to suggest he can win again.

2023 Bletchingly Stakes Field

The Bletchingly Stakes field often attracts graduates out of the Sir John Monash Stakes run at the track a fortnight earlier over 100m less distance. The Bletchingly Stakes also serves as a nice early spring starting point for gallopers eyeing Group race assignments over 1400m up to a mile in the coming months.

The official Bletchingly Stakes 2023 Final Field & Barriers are released the Wednesday of race week and will be published in full below.

The 2023 Bletchingly Stakes field features a small but quality field of winter sprinters led in betting by the rails-drawn General Beau coming off a third in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes and Godolphin’s The Everest performed Ingratiating

Bletchingly Stakes History

Inaugurated in 1994, the Bletchingly Stakes was first won by Poetic King. The Bletchingly Stakes is the last Group race of the minor Melbourne winter racing season.

The race was initially run over 1100m, up until the 2004 edition when it was first held over 1200m, the distance it remains today. Initially graded as a listed race, the Bletchingly Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1997, with Blazing Reality taking it out that year.

Notable Bletchingly Stakes winners include Poetic King (1994), Regal Roller (2005), Apache Cat (2007) and Let Go Thommo (2009). Bletchingly Stakes results since 2000 are listed below.
