2017 Doncaster Mile Field Released

A talented and capacity field of milers has been confirmed for Saturday’s 2017 Doncaster Mile (1600m); the feature race on Day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick.

Equine superstar and defending champion Winx is the notably emission from the 2017 Doncaster Mile field, however several outstanding milers have been confirmed the twenty-strong group, including topweight Hauraki.

Hauraki has been a strong and consistent performer for Godolphin throughout his entire racing career so far and was unlucky to finish in the minors at the highest level several times leading into his recent spring campaign.

Having resumed in September for a smart win in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1600m), the Reset gelding placed second to Winx in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) before mustering a huge turn of foot in the final straight at Randwick to win the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

Failing to handle the conditions when eighth in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and ending his year second in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m), Hauraki resumed this year for third in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) before running fourth in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) last time out.

Godolphin is set to launch a three-pronged attack in the race after trainer John O’Shea also confirmed It’s Somewhat and Prelude winner Spectroscope in the 2017 Doncaster Mile field.

Le Romain appears to have returned to racing in career-best form this time and will carry 56.5kgs in the Doncaster Mile, with the notable advantage of Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Breaking through for his first Group 1 win when beating Press Statement to the line in the Randwick Guineas (1600m) last autumn, Le Romain returned in spring for a number of strong and consistent results, before ending his year a comfortable winner of the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m).

Having resumed this time to win the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m), Le Romain won his third Group 1 crown in the Canterbury Stakes before placing second to Winx in the George Ryder Stakes a fortnight ago.

Chris Waller has dominated the 2017 Doncaster Mile field; accepting positions in the race for a total of four of his stable stars; Arod, McCreery, Endless Drama and Antonio Giuseppe.

Arod began his career under the guidance of Peter Chapple-Hyam in the UK and has posted several good results in Australia, between lacklustre performances since arriving last spring.

McCreery finished second behind Le Romain in the Cantala Stakes most notably in spring and while returning this time to win the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m), finished a distant fifth in the George Ryder Stakes most recently.

Endless Drama has shown plenty of ability through his short Australian racing tenure so far, but faded late in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) to finish sixth at his most recent start.

Antonio Giuseppe is undoubtedly the most intriguing of Waller’s runners confirmed in the Doncaster Mile field, having been originally set for major staying races.

The four-year-old won a Rosehill minor over 1500m with ease first-up, but faded in each of the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at his two most-recent appearances.

Leading Victorian Darren Weir is another trainer who has confirmed several runners in the 2017 Doncaster Mile field, including both Palentino and Tosen Stardom.

A multiple Group 1 winner at the distance, Palentino will carry winning form into the Doncaster Mile after taking out the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington a fortnight ago.

Tosen Stardom has finished second in each of the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and the Blamey Stakes since returning this season.
