The Barry Campbell-trained Admiral is the sure-to-be favourite in Wednesday night’s Tasmanian Stakes 2016 at Launceston Racecourse after the defending champion came up trumps with barrier one.
The latest stakes race of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, the $100,000 Listed Kevin Sharkie Tasmanian Stakes (1600m) is set to run as Launceston Race 6 at 9:30pm (local) on Wednesday evening.
The field features a dozen weight-for-age hopefuls including the reigning Tasmanian Stakes winner Admiral who saluted in the mile showdown 12 months ago from barrier seven.
Last summer the super-consistent son of Mossman took out the race on the back of a victory in the Listed Conquering Stakes (1400m) and Admiral returns chasing the same double this season.
A winner of nine of his 13 Launceston starts to date and boasting three victories from five runs over the mile, the $674,000 earner successfully went back-to-back in the Conquering Stakes on December 7.
Group 1 performed in both Melbourne’s Australian Guineas (5th) last year and Adelaide’s The Goodwood (11th) this May, Admiral has his last start winning jockey Luke Currie aboard again on Wednesday night.
He faces a very similar line-up to the Conquering Stakes and will appreciate the step up in distance as he looks to add to his already very imposing record in the Apple Isle.
The other best out of the traditional lead-up looking to turn the tables on Admiral in the Tasmanian Stakes this week are Conquering Stakes runner-up Hellova Street and third placegetter Jerilderie Letter.
Prepared by Seven Mile Beach trainer Scott Brunton, Helike six-year-old Hellova Street was beaten only a half-neck last start and has a 50% winning strike rate at Launceston Racecourse.
He has been over a mile twice for one win and jumps from barrier six on Wednesday.
Brunton has also accepted for stablemate Gladstone (barrier three), the Dylan Thomas seven-year-old out to atone for his 11th at Ballarat over 1400m last time out on November 19.
Jerilderie Letter meanwhile is a four-year-old Bushranger gelding prepared at Spreyton by Adam Trinder.
The galloper is proven up to 2200m and will eat up the extra metres on Wednesday after crossing only 1.5 lengths away in the Conquering Stakes over 1400m.
He won six of his opening seven career starts in late 2015 – early 2016, but hasn’t won since the Listed Tasmanian Derby (2200m) back in February at Hobart.
At Launceston he’s had five runs for two wins and two thirds and so is equally effective at the track.
Along with Admiral the only other last start winner in the Tasmanian Stakes field this season is the Paul Maher-trained Host mare Miss It And A Bit.
The seven-year-old chestnut is up in class after her win at the track and distance on December 7 in a Benchmark 72 with apprentice Sherry Barr booked for the ride from a wide barrier 11 draw.
The outside alley meanwhile belongs to Jerilderie Letter who Anthony Darmanin rides once again.
