Chris Waller’s smart young filly Winx is out to atone for a last start loss in Group 1 company when she lines up in another Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival elite level as Saturday’s Australian Oaks 2015 favourite at Randwick Racecourse.
There are four Group 1 features highlighting the program in Sydney this weekend for Day 2 of The Championships including the $1 million Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) that has attracted a final field of 13 three-year-old fillies.
Waller’s daughter of Street Cry Winx is the current favourite of those in the ATC Oaks betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $4.20 after being backed in from her opening quote of $4.60.
The money has been steady for the favourite after she and the ‘Magic Man’, Brazilian hoop Joao Moreira came up trumps with barrier one at Tuesday’s draw.
The inside alley however hasn’t produced an Australian Oaks winner since Republic Lass (2002) and Sunday Joy (2003) made it back-to-back wins for the barrier over a decade ago.
Waller meanwhile is after his second win in the race after the success of Royal Descent (2013) just two years ago.
Winx, runner-up to First Seal in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last October, beat home the boys two back at Rosehill to win the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) and was last seen running two lengths away fifth to upset winner Fenway in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on March 28.
Four other Australian Oaks hopes are also under $10 to win this weekend including the aforementioned Vinery Stud Stakes winner Fenway ($6).
Drawn in barrier eight, which last produced a winner in 2004 with Wild Iris, the High Chaparral filly was a $21 roughie when she beat First Seal home in the Vinery Stud Stakes in her Sydney debut.
The Seymour-based, Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Group 1 winner however won’t be found at those odds when she has her first look at Randwick in the Oaks.
Third favourite for the Oaks trophy on Saturday is then Vinery Stud Stakes third placegetter Thunder Lady ($6.50) with a wide barrier 11 draw for her and jockey Zac Purton to overcome.
Daffodil (2009) was the last ATC Oaks winner from gate 11, local trainer John Sargent hoping his improving daughter of Mastercraftsman can be the next.
Winner of the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) last Derby Day in Melbourne, Thunder Lady was runner-up to Set Square in Flemington’s Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) during the spring also so has form over the extra distance.
The other single figure hopes are then the Waller-trained Ballet Suite ($7.50) who only made her black type debut when fourth in the Vinery Stud last start and New Zealand Oaks winner from mid-March Savaria ($8) running down under for the first time – drawn in the outside barriers 13 and 12 respectively.
Just outside the top five is then the Bjorn Baker-trained Candelara ($11) drawn a treat in barrier two and on the short back-up after earning her Oaks assignment on Monday with a win in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) as a $26 outsider.
