The Darren Weir-trained Gallic Chieftain is up in weight and distance but still tipped as the stayer to beat over the two miles in the Ladbrokes Sandown Cup 2017 field this Saturday.

A key feature on the Zipping Classic Day card a Ladbrokes Park, this year’s Listed $150,000 Ladbrokes Sandown Cup (3200m) field features a small but classy line-up of eight end-of-season hopefuls.

The latest Sandown Cup odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au have half the field at single-figures to win including French-bred entire Gallic Chieftain at $2.40.

Dean Yendall rides the son of Tamayuz on 57.5kg, a 3.5kg rise from the weight he carried to a fifth behind Vengeur Masque last Saturday at Flemington in the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m).

Gallic Chieftain was also beaten by the same galloper two starts back running second in the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m), but is tipped to relish his first look at 3200m having made up plenty of ground late on Emirates Stakes Day.

The Geelong Cup form was also franked by the Lindsay Park-trained mare Fanatic who improved on her eighth in that October 25 run to win impressively over 2800m on Melbourne Cup Day.

Fanatic also backs-up in the Sandown Cup on the weekend and is the $3.90 second favourite presenting rock hard fit for the two mile challenge.

She’s twice run over the distance back in New Zealand and is bred to stay being a daughter of 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking.

A now five-year-old prepared in Victoria, she impressed winning from a wide alley on November 7 and looks well-weighted again going back up to 3200m for the first time since the Auckland Cup in March.

The next best in Sandown Cup betting are the Aaron Purcell-trained German import Swacadelic ($4.20) and the early market mover Doukhan ($7.50).

Swacadelic was runner-up to Melbourne Cup fourth placegetter Qewy in the Sandown Cup results last November and comes off a third to Fanatic on Cup Day when forced to race wide, while the winner got a lovely run that saved ground closer to the inside.

Doukhan also looks to have claims for a top three run despite the Robbie Laing-trained Dansili five-year-old not having won since August of last year in France.
