The Royal Sovereign Stakes is a Group 2 sprint race for three year old colts and geldings. Held at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse in February, the 1200m race requires each runner in the field to carry a set weight of 56.0kg.
Worth $175,000 in prize money, the Royal Sovereign Stakes is a good lead up race to the bigger events in the carnival including the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in two weeks time and the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) in four weeks time.
The Royal Sovereign Stakes is the first group race for three year old colts and geldings in Sydney after the New Year. The race day also features the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes, which is the filly equivalent to the Royal Sovereign Stakes, the Breeders Classic and the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes.
