David Vandyke’s Group 1 winner Yankee Rose is one of the highest-rated Thousand Guineas 2016 second acceptances taken by Racing Victoria (RV) this week for the October 8 classic at Caulfield Racecourse.
Held at the same meeting as the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), which attracted 48 second acceptors on Tuesday, the entries for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) are down from 111 nominations to 48 second declarations.
Sitting top of the Thousand Guineas ballot is All American filly Yankee Rose for the Sunshine Coast-based trainer Vandkye.
She ran second in the Golden Slipper as a two-year-old before the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) win in Sydney during the autumn.
Her first-up run this season was a 3.5 length away effort for sixth to Astern in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), which she can improve on getting out over further.
Yankee Rose is as yet untested the Melbourne way of racing and currently pays $11 in pre-field Thousand Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Heading those all-in Thousand Guineas odds post-second declarations at $3.50 is the Chris Waller-trained Omei Sword.
She is also the sole filly still in contention to possibly take on the colts and geldings in the 2016 Caulfield Guineas field and was last seen running second in the Golden Rose.
Waller prepared the Thousand Guineas winner Amicus (2014) two years ago and along with Omei Rose has five other second acceptors including his last start Tea Rose Stakes winner Foxplay.
Having also won the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) this season, Foxwedge filly Foxplay is more likely to remain in Sydney on October 1 at Royal Randwick for the $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).
She is being kept safe in early Thousand Guineas markets however as the $6 second elect behind her well-fancied stablemate.
Third pick and the only other second acceptor under $10 for the win at $8 is the David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Harlow Gold.
The progressive daughter of Tavistock is bred to stay and caught the eye with a Caulfield win over 1600m on September 17.
The Lindsay Park stable won last year’s Thousand Guineas with Stay With Me (2015), while co-trainer David Hayes also enjoyed success in the mile classic with Miss Finland (2006) and Irish Lights (2009).
The team have a total of six second acceptors this season including also the progressive Sebring Dream ($11).
Stay With Me won the Group 1 off a sixth in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) last year, which also produced Amicus (2nd) for her 2014 win.
The Thousand Guineas Prelude runs this weekend at Caulfield and features notable Thousand Guineas second acceptors including: Simon Miller’s multiple Group winning Perth visitor Whispering Brook, the local Henry Dwyer-trained Leotie and Phillip Stokes’ Hinchinbrook filly Samara Dancer last seen running third in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m).
Other headline entries still in contention include the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Global Glamour, Robbie Laing’s Group 3 winner Missrock and the New Zealand-trained La Luna Rossa for Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman.
The 2016 Thousand Guineas final field of acceptances is due out on Tuesday October 4.
