Villermont Leads 2018 Gunsynd Classic Field & Odds

Ciaron Maher’s Victorian visitor Villermont is tipped as the three-year-old to beat at Doomben on Saturday with the colt heading the Gunsynd Classic 2018 field and odds for Brisbane.

Closing the Victory Stakes Day card as Doomben Race 9 at 4:22pm (AEST), this weekend’s Group 3 $125,000 Gunsynd Classic (1630m) field is set to run at a capacity 15 starters.

The line-up now includes the Toby Edmonds-trained first emergency Evolo drawn the outside barrier and coming in for the early Chris Waller-trained scratching Sambro (9).

Clear favourite in Gunsynd Classic betting meanwhile is a nicely-bred son of All Too Hard, Villermont, who pays $2.60 and firming to salute with local Damian Browne in the saddle.

This is the reigning Sandown Guineas winner’s first run in Brisbane, but he’s tipped to relish racing in Queensland on the back of a close fourth to Muraaqeb in Randwick’s Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) from April 7.

The Gunsynd Classic looks a winnable race for Villermont who was competitive in two Group 1 features earlier in the spring including a fourth in Flemington’s Australian Guineas (1600m) over the mile distance.

There are currently four other single-figure hopes in the Gunsynd Classic odds online for this Saturday including the rails-drawn Dark Dream ($6).

Kerry Parker’s All American gelding brings into the race ultra-consistent form having run top two in all six of his career starts to date.

The Kembla Grange-trained grey was last seen making his black-type debut at Randwick on April 14 where he was narrowly defeated on the line in the Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m).

Dark Dream goes up from 53kg to 57kg this weekend, but gets a soft run from barrier one with Larry Cassidy aboard and the step-up in distance will also suit with the horse boasting winning form up to 1900m.

His last start conqueror, South Pacific Classic winner California Turbo, is also in the Gunsynd Classic on Saturday as a lead-up to the Group 1 $600,000 Queensland Derby (2200m) back at the track in early June.

Trained by Sydney masters Peter & Paul Snowden, Fastnet Rock gelding California Turbo sits as an $8 chance to win the Gunsynd on the weekend and make it three wins on the trot.

He has only lost one of his four career starts to date when up over a mile second-up at Newcastle back in December and needs to prove he can stay in this before pressing onto the Derby.

The other single-figure chances are Ben Currie’s last start Toowoomba winner over the distance Hang ($7.50) and the Robert Heathcote-trained Zoffany gelding Zofonic Dancer ($9) coming off a third to Hang last time out.
