Sapphire Stakes

The Magic Millions National Classic (Queensland Sapphire Stakes) is a Group 3 race for fillies & mares previously known as the Glenlogan Park Stakes and now contested on Queensland Oaks Day at Eagle Farm Racecourse as a Queensland Winter Racing Carnival lead-up to the Tattersall's Tiara.

2021 Magic Millions National Classic (Queensland Sapphire Stakes) Results

  • 1st: #5 Nudge
  • 2nd: #7 Yamazaki
  • 3rd: #3 Rocha Clock

Note: In 2021 the Queensland Sapphire Stakes ran as the Magic Millions National Classic and did not hold Black-Type status.

The Group 3 Queensland Sapphire Stakes – formerly the Lady Of The Turf Stakes and Glenlogan Park Stakes – is a middle distance event held under weight-for-age conditions annually at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Queensland Oaks Day.

Open only to fillies and mares, the Magic Millions National Classic (Queensland Sapphire Stakes) pays a total of $500,000 prizemoney having been given a huge boost to the stakes in 2021. The race when run as the Glenlogan Park Stakes under set weights conditions has been moved around the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival program and has previously been held on both Doomben 10,000 Day and Kingsford-Smith Cup Day.

The Queensland Sapphire Stakes is not to be confused with Randwick’s Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) – also for fillies and mares – contested in April over the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

From 2021 onwards the event runs over 1600m (up from 1300m) and attracts some of the finest local mares and fillies, as well as some solid interstate runners during their Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival bids. The runners may have had a lead-up in a race like Adelaide’s Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) and the likely next-up option for female gallopers out of the race is the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara.

The 2021 Glenlogan Park Stakes ran at Eagle Farm Racecourse on Saturday June 5, 2021 as the Magic Millions National Classic (Queensland Sapphire Stakes) and was won by the Chris Waller-trained Nudge.

Glenlogan Park / Sapphire Stakes History

The Sapphire Stakes was first run in 1985 and was known as the Rosemount Wine Stakes. Over the years, the race has experienced a number of name changes and has been known variously as:

  • Rosemount Wine Stakes
  • Orlando Wines Stakes
  • Minister For Transport Stakes
  • QBBS Breeders’ Stakes
  • QBBS Stakes
  • Michaels Restaurant Stakes
  • The Original Tastee Pies Stakes
  • Diamond Stud Stakes
  • Lady Of The Turf Stakes
  • Moreton Stakes
  • Glenlogan Park Stakes
  • Sapphire Stakes
  • Magic Millions National Classic

The race was initially run as a Listed race, until it was upgraded to a Group 3 in 2010. A broad variety of horses have won this race, coming from a diverse background of pedigree and former racing experience.

In 2021 it did not hold Black-Type status.

The event was previously run at set weights over 1300m, but from 2020 onwards runs over a mile at weight-for-age.

Notable recent winners of the Glenlogan Park / Sapphire Stakes include Ortensia (2009) who went on to great international campaigns in Dubai and England, Wealth Princess and Stella Maree and classy Godolphin-raced mare Savatiano (2019).

From 2017 onwards the race moved from Doomben to Eagle Farm Racecourse due to a reshuffle of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival program.
