Glenlogan Park Stakes 2019 Results: Savatiano Beats Quilista

The punters tipped Team Snowden’s last start Doomben winner Quilista in this afternoon’s Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes but with the favourite over-racing early it was Godolphin’s mare Savatiano back in the winners’ stall at Eagle Farm.

Quilista

Quilista finished second as the beaten favourite in the 2019 Glenlogan Park Stakes results at Eagle Farm.

On May 18 Quilista was ultra-impressive carrying 60kg to a 3.5 length win in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m).

She failed to make it back-to-back Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival wins however when rolled in this season’s Group 3 $150,000 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1300m) on Kingsford-Smith Cup Day.

Very keen from the jump throwing her head in the air, Quilista was too fresh today and failed to conserve energy.

The beaten favourite did battle on for second behind the impressive Glenlogan Park Stakes winner Savatiano who enjoyed her first turf triumph since the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong in August last year.

Savatiano came off a very close second at Scone in the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) on May 11 and franked that form in Brisbane saluting in her Eagle Farm debut, with Tommy Berry in the saddle, adding to her smart record over the distance (6:3-2-1).

Berry got a clean jump with Savatiano who settled into a beautiful position behind Quilista before going straight past her on the straight.

“She was good today,” Berry said post-win.

“She turned up in great for she’s been a very consistent mare the whole way through.

“I didn’t want to let him [Kerrin McEvoy on the leader] out of my sight, but she went straight by him.

“She’s always been a little bit suspect at the end of her races … but she was very impressive.

“They [Godolphin] place them to perfection.

“She’s come all the way here and she’s been turned out like this so full credit to them.”

In third was Kurt Goldman’s I Am Invincible five-year-old Eckstein who relished the drop in grade having finished at the tail-end of the field in her three latest runs all in Group 1 company during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Trainer James Cummings indicated that the team would keep Savatiano in Brisbane for the remainder of the carnival, possibly to target a race like the Group 1 $500,000 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) back at the track on June 22.

“She was just in great form she was very fit today,” Cummings said.

“Tommy had the horse to show the speed to settle in behind the long leader and the result was the perfect storm for her because the leader was a bit fresh and was the horse to beat so we were able to cruise up to her.

“She is a very strong mare and a very good galloper and has run in some very good races.

“Deserving of a second stakes win here and I’d like to think she’s got another one in her so I think we will [press on for the rest of the carnival].”
