Champagne Classic

Note: For 2022 the Doomben 10,000 meeting including the Spirit Of Boom Classic has been moved to Eagle Farm Racecourse due to heavy rainfall. The Champagne Classic is a Group 2 race for two-year-olds as a lead-up to the JJ Atkins each Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival now known as the Spirit Of Boom Classic.

  • 2nd: #13 Exo Lady
  • 3rd (Dead Heat): #6 Thelwell / #18e Political Debate

The Champagne Classic – currently run as the Spirit Of Boom Classic – is a Group 2 race held at Doomben Racecourse* during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. Worth $250,000 in prize money, this 1200m set weight race is open only to two-year-olds and is traditionally held on the same day as the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) in early or mid-May.

*Note: In 2022 the Spirit Of Boom Classic ran at Eagle Farm Racecourse with the Doomben 10,000 meeting moved due to heavy rainfall.

For 2020 the Champagne Classic offered $175,000 in prize money and took place on the same day as the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm with the carnival reduced and most Group 1 races including the Doomben 10,000 card cut from the program due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Champagne Classic is regarded as the best lead-up race to the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) held two weeks later and juveniles may then progress onto a mile for the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day in June.

Rothfire (2020) was the last two-year-old to complete the Champagne Classic – JJ Atkins double.

In 2021 the race was run as the Spirit Of Boom classic in honour of the 2014 Doomben 10,000 champion Spirit Of Boom and was aptly won by Spirit Of Boom gelding Prince Of Boom.

The 2022 Champagne Classic ran on Saturday May 14, 2022 as the Spirit Of Boom Classic at Eagle Farm Racecourse having been moved from Doomben for 2022 due to heavy rainfall and was won by the Annabel Neasham-trained Pariah colt Swiss Exile ($8).

2022 Champagne Classic Betting Odds

The Champagne Classic 2022 odds and betting market links to Ladbrokes.com.au on the two-years-old feature sprint will be available below the week of the race.

Rothfire ($2.40 in 2020) followed by the fellow Rob Heathcote-trained Prince Of Boom ($4.40 in 2021) are the latest favourites in Champagne Classic betting to salute for the punters.

2022 Champagne Classic Field

The Champagne Classic field attracts the best two-year-old winter gallopers that may have had an earlier Brisbane run in a race like the Listed Dalrello Stakes in late April at Eagle Farm and who are targeting a run in the following month’s JJ Atkins field. In 2022 the Dalrello Stakes winning filly Exo Lady ran second as the beaten favourite behind Swiss Exile in the Spirit Of Boom Classic results.

Another key lead-up into the Champagne Classic field is the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic and Sizzling (2012) and Pressday (2010) won both races as well as the Group 1 JJ Atkins taking out the winter 2YO triple crown in Queensland. In 2020 Rothfire backed-up from a Champagne Classic win for the punters to take out the Group 1 JJ Atkins next start.

The official Champagne Classic 2022 field & barriers are set for release on the Wednesday before race day and will be published in full below.

The 2022 Spirit Of Boom final field, which will face off at Eagle Farm Racecourse, features a capacity line-up of potential JJ Atkins-bound two-year-olds including the Tony Gollan-trained Capitalist colt Capital Tower chasing a fourth win from as many starts.

Champagne Classic History

The Champagne Classic was first run in 1982 and won by Peand. The race record of 1:09.36 was set by Gold Edition in 2006 and after starting out as a Listed event, gained its Group 2 status for the first time in the same year.

Plenty of top class juveniles have won the Champagne Classic over the years including Daybreak Lover (1983), Chief De Beers (1994), Court (2008), Sizzling (2012), Brazen Beau (2014) and Rothfire (2020).

In 2022 the Champagne Classic (run as the Spirit Of Boom Classic) took place at Eagle Farm Racecourse due to heavy rainfall making for unsuitable conditions at Doomben.
