Each Way: No. 7 Autumn Boy

I’m siding with a bit of value in this year’s Doncaster, and while Sheza Alibi has the talent to blow them away, the one I want to be on at each way odds is AUTUMN BOY (1). Drawn perfectly in gate one and carrying just 52kg, the Chris Waller-trained colt arrives off a dominant Rosehill Guineas win where he comfortably put a gap on ATC Derby favourite Green Spaces. That performance made up for his Randwick Guineas second behind the filly, and although the drop back to the mile raises the usual query, Waller rarely misfires when placing a horse in this race. The inside draw hasn’t produced a Doncaster winner since Happy Clapper in 2018 and it’s been a decade since Waller last claimed the race with Winx, but Autumn Boy has long carried big expectations and already owns a Caulfield Guineas victory at the trip. With the right map and the right trainer, he looks a genuine knockout chance at the price. Trust the stable. Trust the set-up. Autumn Boy can announce himself here.

Doncaster Mile News

The Group 1 Doncaster Mile is a 1600m handicap race for the best middle-distance gallopers in the country. Held at Randwick Racecourse during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the race is also known as the Doncaster Handicap and is regarded as the equivalent of the spring’s Epsom Handicap.

The Doncaster Mile offers a lucrative $4 million in prize money making it one of the richest races in the autumn and is open to all horses aged three years and over. With the threat of Coronavirus shutting down Australian racing, the 2020 Doncaster Mile prizemoney was reduced to $1.5 million, with the stakes back up to $3 million for the 2021 edition and boosted to $4 million ahead of the 2023 race.

The Doncaster Mile is now held on the opening day of The Championships at Royal Randwick on an exciting race card that also features the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1200m), the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m), and the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) which is known as the Inglis Sires’.

Key lead-up races into the Doncaster Mile field include the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) run the Saturday before at Rosehill Gardens and the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) a fortnight before. Recent winners of the George Ryder Stakes – Doncaster Mile double include Winx (2016), Vision And Power (2009), Haradasun (2007), and Racing To Win (2006).

The Doncaster Mile winner is also exempt from ballot from the $5 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) held the following Saturday. The Doncaster Mile – Queen Elizabeth Stakes double was recently achieved by More Joyous (2012).

In 2021 the Doncaster Mile ran on the second Saturday of April with all race meetings of the autumn in Sydney from Slipper Day onwards postponed a week due to the weather.

The 2022 Doncaster Mile form was franked with the winner Mr Brightside going on to do the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes – Group 2 Feehan Stakes double in Melbourne that spring. He also ran third in Flemington’s Group 1 Champions Mile (1600m) over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The Doncaster Mile form from 2022 was further franked with the runner-up I’m Thunderstruck going on to run second in a host of subsequent Group 1 races including the Cox Plate and win the Makybe Diva Stakes that spring.

Icebath meanwhile ran third in the Doncaster Mile results (after a 2nd the following year) and after a number of subsequent Group 1 placings, won that year’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) in Victoria.

Mr Brightside returned to 2023 on the back of his lead-up The All-Star Mile victory in Melbourne to successfully defend his Doncaster Mile title.

Mr Brightside franked the Doncaster form firmly in the spring of 2023 saluting in races including the Group 1 Memsie Stakes and Makybe Diva Stakes. He also finished runner-up in that year’s King Charles III Stakes, Cox Plate, and Champions Mile.

In 2024 the Les Bridge-trained three-year-old Celestial Legend won the Randwick Guineas – Doncaster Mile double.

Sheza Alibi (2026) was the last runner to complete the Randwick Guineas / Doncaster Mile double as a three-year-old.

The 2024 Doncaster Mile form was franked with the runner-up, Pericles, going on to win the $2 million Five Diamonds race that spring.

The 2025 Doncaster Mile winner Stefi Magnetica went on to run second in the Queen of the Turf Stakes at her next start before returning for a big spring highlighted by her win in the $2 million The Invitation.

In 2026, Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman’s class filly Sheza Alibi won the Doncaster by over four lengths posting her fifth win on the trot and back-to-back Group 1s following her Randwick Guineas win earlier that autumn.

Doncaster Mile Betting

The Doncaster Mile is always one of the most popular betting events on the Australian racing calendar because of the open nature of the Group 1 event.

Favourites have a fair record in the Doncaster Mile with the likes of Winx (2016), More Joyous (2011), Haradasun (2007), and Racing To Win (2006) all winning as the punters elect in the last decade.

There have also been some notable upset Doncaster Mile results including back in 1985 when Row Of Waves won as a 100/1 shot and more recently the 2020 win by $41 outsider Nettoyer.

There was another upset in the 2022 Doncaster Mile with Mr Brightside saluting at 20/1.

Mr Brightside returned in 2023 to salute for the punters and become the latest favourite at the time in Doncaster Mile betting at $6 to win.

The 2025 Doncaster Mile results saw a massive upset with the first five horses over the line jumping at double-figures including the $18 winner Stefi Magnetica!

Futures Doncaster Mile odds open months in advance of the race at online bookmakers including Ladbrokes.com.au offering punters an early chance to lock in their selections at generous all-in pricing.

Sheza Alibi ($1.90 in 2026) was the last Doncaster Mile favourite to win.

The Doncaster Mile form is always tough to analyse because there are generally horses coming from a variety of different form lines to contest the Group 1 event.

The George Ryder Stakes is considered the key form race, but in recent years Doncaster Mile winners have had their final lead-up race in events like the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m).

In 2022 the upset Doncaster Mile winner Mr Brightside came off a lead-up fourth in Melbourne’s The All-Star Mile (1600m).

Mr Brightside returned to win the 2023 The All-Star Mile at The Valley before a successful title defence saluting for the punters in the 2023 Doncaster Mile results. He became the first back-to-back Doncaster Mile winner since Sacred Falls (2013-14).

The 2025 Doncaster Mile winning mare Stefi Magnetica improved on a lead-up sixth in that year’s George Ryder Stakes for her upset victory.
